Not really a fan of the SS Platinum. I like the older HD Platinums from the late 90s to the early 2000s.
Wasn't kidding about the drive...I have been known to get in the car and drive for loooong distances for something I really want...really perturbs the Wife.
Yah, if you are more of a collector than rehab/flipper, then it would probably be tough on the wife. I actually earn a few bucks while partaking in my hobby, so it is a win-win. Certainly not something you could live off of, but enough of a net profit to keep every one happy.

She's more or less used to it. I really have a hard time selling stuff, I always have. I'm just not a Capitalist, I guess. I'll probably end up giving one to our daughter and grandson who live in the house next door.

I consider restoring these older Weber's a "hobby" as well but if I factored the time I put into them I would just be better off working an hour or two OT as my work at I I would gross a far better paycheck.
I like turning something "old" into something new and fresh and this is one of the cheaper hobbies to pursue as I enjoy working with my hands.

Jeff, that is my situation as well. I would make more money per hour flipping burgers at McDonalds. But I would hate flipping burgers and I like fixing up old Webers. I also like not having a boss or set hours. That is a job. I don't consider grill rehabbing to be a job....for me, it is a hobby that at least pays for itself....I have other hobbies as well, but they wind up being a net loss in $$$.

Amen to that, Jeff! And as you (and Bruce) are scraping the gunk off a cookbox or lid, don't you find yourself thinking, "what in the he11 were these people eating? Go easy on the marinade, for cryin' out loud!"
Yah, but the ones I cant figure out is the grills that have a thick coating of that brown gooey slimy grease all over the insides. It is like they never get the grill up to 500+ degrees or something. But that is some nasty stuff and I just hate cleaning cook boxes with that crap in them.
Exactly Jeff, most hobbies are like that. I just enjoy the fact that I can partake in my hobby and actually make a few bucks instead of it being a net loss monetarily like most. With all hobbies, the emphasis is on having fun. With a job, the emphasis is on making money.
Well, I like to think of it as you two guys (and the other rehabbers!) as restoring the breed for future generations. I'm more of a preserver, but I've been very lucky in that both of my daily drivers, unrestored, are not in the condition that requires much more than maintenance. Now the Genesis 3 that I picked up a couple or three weeks ago has a rusty RH frame rail section...I can feel the bulge along the bottom...that I'm going to have to cut out and replace when the weather cools down.

Well guys, I had to drive through tropical like storms on the East coast, fight throught 3 hours traffic jams in New York, and watch my back for the sniper in the DC area but I finally got my new (used) Klipschorns home Sunday nite!! It started out like this...I had been talking with the seller in ...

Over 900 miles round trip...
Yeah...I.m not right in the head,
Like I said I'm not afraid to travel for what I want.
The lawnmower is a mint last of it's breed Commercial John Deere which having owned 2 JX75s I always wanted a JX85. When that one popped up I had to make it mine.
The speakers are Klipsch's biggest and best Klipschorns models and I got them for an absolute steal and they were mint as well.
Sometimes the deals are not right around the corner.
Jeff. my hearing is shot from working in America's factories for most of my life, so the best speakers in the world wouldn't make much difference to me. And my favorite lawnmower was a Jacobsen Super Bagger but I pay someone to mow my yard these days. Things change as you get older...
My wife used to work for Target as a price team member. She was the one to put the red stickers on the clearance merchandise. I swear, there was a time when she got paid and had no money to show for it because she bought all this clearance stuff. I'm still finding stuff with red tags on it and she hasn't worked in 25 years...but I put up with her because I'm lucky to have a woman that puts up with me.
EDIT: I still tease her about all the "good deals" she got. I'm not the only one in the family that will buy anything if the price is right...
EDIT2: And to be 100% fair about it, my wife rarely, and I do mean rarely, ever spends money on herself. All of her deals were for the kids or for me or for the family.
