@Lynn Dollar I can't offer any advice but when I read the title I worried you bought something and had to move to the back yard. I'm glad that was not the case.
I would definitely welcome some pointers/intel.If you want memory foam pointers, lmk. I know nothing of the other types you’ve listed as we switched to memory foam 11 years ago now, bought on Amazon, and just replaced that 10 year old one with a new one.
I will add that we bought a 4” low profile box spring for our current 14” memory foam mattress and it’s been a massive improvement versus no box spring.
Both box spring and mattress were from Amazon and were very happy with both.
Best mattresses that we have had were the one's that we got from BJ's before we moved. Once we moved and had a king size bed, we went to a local mattress company and bought a nice one (so we thought). It was a pillow topped mattress, I've forgotten the brand and of course you can't flip it on occasion, all you can do is rotate it end-to-end. It has not worn well at all. The in-laws swear by the Sleep Number bed, it may be our next choice. We found the mattress we have ended up being a little too firm for us, and of course as time goes by and your back ages, comfort needs can change.’A’ grand? Those salespeople were directing us towards 4 and 5k setups, telling us that, ‘sure you could go cheaper, but you’ll be back in no time to buy another because they wear out so fast‘. And, ‘ If you don’t buy our box spring, you void the warranty.’
Honestly, I think we would have been better of getting the Costco special for 4-5 hundred, and if we didn’t like it, just donate it and try again. It would still be cheaper. Also, Costco’s generous return policy includes mattresses. I would avoid the mattress dealers at all costs.
This is going to sound like a fairy tale but it ain’t. My wife and I are sleeping on the mattress we bought in 1991. It’s as good now as the day we bought it and has no sink hole at all, it’s firm and excellent. Its a mattress, no fluffy foamy pillow top, no fruufy frills just a mattress on box springs. We didn’t know anything about mattresses and don’t now either or we’d be better at picking one. The ones we’ve since bought for other bedrooms in the house at various times are terrible. How can anyone know what a good mattress is laying on one for a minute in a store or reading a review of someone else’s opinion? I say your either lucky choosing a good one or your still on the one you bought when quality still meant something to a company. You want get thirty years out of one made today.
That is BS on the box springs. Most are nothing more than solid platforms. All they really want to do is sell you a high profit item. Unless it is broken, reuse your old one.Forgot to mention that when I was researching mattresses, I read that box springs are the root cause of a lot of mattress problems. It really clicked with me because my son's bunk bed is designed for matress only use (no space for a box spring) and I always thought his bunk was the best bed in our house.
I like it, a man of few words!
<scratches head> Not entirely sure that I'd agree. Box springs will provide a fully supported foundation over just dropping a mattress on a frame, and I would not be surprised that some are better than others. That is BS on the box springs.
In the past, box springs were just that. Now they are mostly referred to as foundations, consisting of an upholstered wooden frame with no springs. The support and resilience for the most is built into the mattresses. I am sure there are probably still some mattress/foundation systems, but it is not the norm.<scratches head> Not entirely sure that I'd agree.
