HOW TO: Paint a Weber Genesis Cook Box the fast and easy way

Most of the original paint is still in tact. This is the only spot where it isn’t.

I would strip it all or at least sand the living crap out of it. Do you have an air compressor?

Being that that paint has been on for 25+ years there’s oxidation that’s already occurred under the surface and has yet to rear its ugly face. And when it does the paint adjacent to (old and new), it will start to peel and flake off as well. If you’re going to do it, go all the way. My opinion.

It is best to remove all the paint on a cook box before repainting. If you don't, it wont look too good and any left over paint might start peeling later on. Having the cook box sand blasted is the best option and can usually be done for around $25.
Working on finding a source for sandblasting.

Reached out to about 10 places that say they do it.

First guy said their tools were too powerful for the job.

Second guy quoted me $180 😳

The search continues!

I can’t tell if it’s shadows in the pic, but I’d try to get below the top lip a little better. Or just be certain it’s not greasy.

Aside from giving it a good wipe down with your preferred pre painting cleaner, it looks pretty good.

I feel like all of us use a little different products for that step. Some use brake cleaner. I use wax and grease removers.

I will also highly recommended Rustoleum high heat ultra - Semi gloss - for the cookbox, lid end caps and Weber logo.

Give it a good wipe down once you've achieved the final finish on the metal with a good degreaser that does not attract moisture or leave any residue. Acetone, lacquer thinner, hell even good old BrakeKleen will do the job. That aluminum is pretty porous so you want to get it as clean as possible. I know others told you, to strip it so it would not peel off. But, honestly, if it had sound paint on it and you really degreased it well, that would give you a more solid job than over bare metal.
