They didn't until the Genesis 1000 came out, the wheels are the easiest way to tell the difference. Now, that doesn't take into account someone who replaced the wheels on their older grill with the newer style wheels later on.When did the Genesis 1s start getting the newer style wheels ?

Excellent suggestionHave a look at the end caps and firebox to see if you can find casting dates. Looks like a pie with a year in the middle. Easiest to find on the end caps.
