Genesis XXI (Jr) Restoration

Thanks Josh, I appreciate hearing about your techniques. It sounds like there are different ways that work for different people and projects. Also, every grill has had a different history of use and wear and tear.

I’ve found that leaving a lid in the sun for a while and then scraping seems to help, and the carbon scrapes in less little jagged pieces, and more of a roll . Like Josh, I don’t do anything prior to scraping and I also go thru a fair amount of razor blades.

I got some IPE Ironwood "Brazilian Walnut" cut up today. I was planning on cutting up a bit more but my blades were gettin dull. It should be enough to keep me busy for a while anyway. 63 slats + 6 Genesis Jr. Handles and 6 first generation Genesis handles and 6 second generation Genesis handles.

Your wood looks really nice! That stuff really holds up well. We have a 14 year old small front porch deck in IPE, never did anything to it and it still looks beautiful. Man, it is really difficult on tools though.
I really like the way it looks without finish. That silvery gray look but I know if you drip grease on it from your barbecue it will leave marks that stand out really bad so I'll have to figure out how I want to finish it. I plan on doing some testing.

As far as being difficult to tool and work with. I like a challenge and the things that don't come easy. I think it will be well worth it.

Thank you, Josh!

Looks like a good product. Why do you think it would be better than my favorite:

Its probably no better or worse agree with Josh if your happy with the Mc Closky then go no farther I have used GF products they make the best wipe on poly out of anyone out there have used it many times in interior applications. Had my carpet in my basement replaced with vinyl plank in driftwood had maple cabinets down there it looked horrible against the flooring so used GF Milk paint in the Driftwood color to paint the cabinets its really a grey color even the wife approved.

By the way GF products aren't cheap either.

Thank you Brian! I appreciate you sharing your experience.

So I'm working on the handle for the junior. My first attempt not perfect but a success in my mind. The biggest success is that my measurements and figures for bits to order for my plunger router worked perfectly and we're exactly the sizes I needed and wanted. This first handle is not perfect and I didn't think it would be. The slots don't line up perfectly if you site down it but I know what I did wrong and how to fix it a couple different ways. I may just try this makeshift jig on one more handle and if I can get it to work perfectly then I will continue to use it otherwise I will build a proper jig on a table. I'm going to start my second handle now wish me luck.
