Genesis Gold Part 2


 
I ended up cutting the tank scale off the frame with a sawzall. This was without a doubt the most time and effort I've spent breaking down a grill. Getting the plastic end caps off of the frame extensions was another time consuming project. It's all good though. This has already been a tremendous learning experience for me highlighting the differences between the older Genesis 1000 models that I prefer to work on and the slightly newer Silver/Gold/Platinum grills, especially when they aren't in the best of condition.

I did think of you while I was banging them out with a steel rod. I've got them soaking in the kitchen sink in the trusty bleach/ dish detergent solution right now along with the knobs and igniters.

If you come up with a secret to getting the extremely stuck ones loose, let me know. I have resorted to cutting them out of the frame ends to save the handles and that is after spending a lot of time trying to get them out other ways.

I think it's safe to say that they were both extremely stuck. I sprayed WD 40 into the frame piece and let it soak in overnight. Then I inserted a steel rod into the frame piece and repeatedly banged it up and down on the rod until they came out. It was quite the workout. The process deformed the end of the end cap a little but they they are both still good.
 
I have gone through more than that to get them out. Did the soaking them in the sink bleach/dish soap water work?

I am undefeated with a vice and the 3 pound persuader, except for the one that broke when it hit the ground... do you have a vise?

Now that I think about it, that may have worked too. I didn't throw them in the sink until after I had freed them.
