Do's & Don'ts of Probe Placement in Smokers

Good article. I've ruined two Thermoworks probes and its been entirely my fault, keeping the probe in ribeyes when I seared over live fire. And I did not learn the first time, stupidly, it took me two times to learn to take the probe out and use the Thermopen.

Great article - thanks for sharing. Some great tips to keep in mind.

I went through two probes on my Maverick thermometer - not because of misuse/burning them up, but that dang junction of cable to probe which either failed or was intermittent.

I did an admitted 'hack'/preventative fix on the replacements by using high temp automotive silicone sealer (rated up to 600F) and sealed up that junction, then wrapped in high temp automotive aluminum tape which provides a type of 'strain relief' for the cable/probe junction.

Has worked great now for years - no more failed probes.

Great reading and informative. I don't go to the Thermoworks site that much other than reading their emails. I haven't toasted any of their probes for my Smoke, but will take the precautions they show for pellet smokers and my Genesis.
