Did What I Said I Wouldn't

But, I have my reasoning. Bought a new freezer today. https://www.samsclub.com/p/samsung-11-4-cu-ft-upright-freezer/prod25171737?xid=plp_product_7
Yes it's frost free. Yes I said I would only buy manual defrost. However, I have been testing some things. We've been freezing some packages and I have been leaving them in our upstairs bottom freezer/fridge combo. I guess the troubles we had before losing packages. Was likely due to poor handling and of the sealer on our part. Because now, I am not seeing any loose seals. Also, if I could have found a freezer as nice as the one I bought (with the height, and ease of load/unload) in a manual defrost, I would have likely gone toward that. But, I like the large upper shelves for large items (whole birds, roasts, etc.), and the in door shelves for smaller items and the pull out drawers. Also like the 10 yr warranty.
And it's on what appears to be closeout pricing. Only 2 were left and one in a damaged box so I made the executive decision.
All that and since the one we have now is nearing the need for a defrost, I just figured I could plug in the new one, get it cold, move the food and just leave the old one turned off and door open to defrost. Then either give it to oldest daughter and son in law or sell it

Larry, I think you are going to be happy with your decision. We just had a steak that had been in two of our frost free freezers for well over a year and it was fine. The only time I see any frost damage is when the seal on the package didn't hold which is very rare.
We went from an 11cf to a 20cf, both frost frees, and both were perfect with no issues.
So much less hassle than a non-frost free. At my age less hassle is gold!

What’s the temperature in H E double hockey sticks!?
I love it, you deal in absolutes so much then, realize that there are good options! At least you admit it!

You scared me with that headline, Larry. I thought for sure you were going to tell us that you put pineapple on your pizza or ketchup on your hotdog!

We've had many years experience with home-sealed food, and the only issues have been incomplete seals or damage to the "honeycomb" side of the bags. In fact, we're thinking about getting a chamber-type sealer just so we can use the more robust commercial bags. Like Rich, we've had meat in the freezer for years that's still perfectly good, even with a frost-free unit.

Enjoy your new freezer!

That’s the first thing I thought as well! I’m in the same camp, BTW!

Thankfully our friend and neighbor drove us to Sam's with his pickup. Now it's sitting in the garage and I have to figure out how the heck I'm gonna get it to the basement. It's not like the other one. I brought that one in the basement by myself. But, this one is 6' tall and close to 2' wide. And not sure how it's packed but, in the box it's more like 6 i/2 ' tall. And WAY heavier than the Thompson I bought a couple years ago

That's mildly interesting. Both the 11 cu. ft. chest freezer I converted into a kegerator and the full size vertical freezer in the basement moved easily on a furniture dolly.

I just ordered the Whirlpool 17.7-cu ft frost free from my local Lowe's, $866 delivered, it will be here Saturday. These comments about items falling off the shelves can be resolved by purchasing freezer crates/baskets, pretty standard stuff. Not to rain on your parade, but I am pretty stoked about scoring a $1,200 freezer for $800 + tax.....

Down the stairs?
Yes, actually. Kegerator lives in the media room, half a flight down from the house entry. House freezer is a full flight down.

Appliance dollies, IMO, are highly useful. Wider than a hand cart, almost always larger wheels, and stair climbers. Oh, can't forget the strap.

I've thought about it. I'm not 35 anymore though :D I noticed a real drop off in physical strength. I used to be able to carry a 32" tube tv down those stairs or up without breaking a sweat (last done in my early 60s) to take it out to recycling center. Now? Couldn't budge one. So, IDK would still need help. Though I have never used a dolly. So, not sure about how much control I would have and if I could use one myself.
I would love to simply have it in my kitchen. Then no need to drag food into the basement and back up.

Odd that you brought that up Larry, Last night I said to Barb "Do you think that things are a lot heavier now than they were 10 years ago" Her response "It's just that increase in gravity they've been talking about" I decided to let that one slide.

Observationally..... I do think refrigerators & freezers have gotten lighter over the decades, due to synthetic materials and thinner metallic skins. The newer models appear to be much better insulated, but with much lighter refrigeration systems. Overall, it's a win for reduced energy consumption, but the pumps just don't last as long. And with the influx of ice & water dispensers, there's also more to go wrong there.

Yeah not magical stuff in this freezer. It's just a freezer. And given how light the 7 cu ft one is compared to this 11 cu ft this thing must be built like a tank. Because only 2 years ago I carried that 7 down to the basement myself. No way that's happening on this Samsung. Unless an actual appliance dolly has some type of magical power to give me super human powers :D

Suggestion, contact a local moving company but not one of the big interstates companies.
Thats what I did when I had to move a gun safe and a freezer down into the lower level of our new house.
They did it between jobs and it cost me $75, but worth every penny of it, the gun safe weighs about 400lbs.

Not enough room to leave it in the garage?
I could have but I already had a refrigerator in the garage. With all my tools, a large work bench plus four large roll aways wall space was at a premium.
I did find some space a year or so later as I got tired of running up and down the stairs to get stuff out of it.

I meant the OP, Larry.
