Deck Demo BBQ Chicken

So, our deck has been rotting out over the winter.
I’ve been patching it, but it really needs to be replaced.
I started yesterday and got about 20% done.

I got about half of it done today.

But I did take time out to make some bbq chicken!
Pammi made a rub of SPOG plus paprika, and I cooked it indirect using KBB.

I may have to hold off on finishing the deck, though. We have a morning dove that decided to nest on a bench in the corner.

But I’ll work around that corner.

Oh yeah, I got a plated shot!

Lots of great work going on there! We need to tear out our deck and start over. Would like to do pavers. Only porblem is our deck is 3' off the ground. Not wanting to step out of the house that makes a paver deck pretty spendy. So probably will go with synthetic decking when we do. unfortunately the framing is sub par. So we have to take out everything and start fresh.

I'd love to do synthetic decking, but that's about $1000 that I don't have.
Putting wood back down will run me about $300.

So, I ordered all the lumber for the deck online with Lowe’s last Wednesday. I got an email the next morning saying that my order was ready and that they’d hold it for 7 days.
We went Saturday morning to pick it up. Stood in line at the customer service counter, observing our social distancing.
I showed the lady my email and ID. She said that another lady would meet me in lumber.
Come to find out, my order was never pulled!
They pulled it pretty quickly, and were picky about the deck boards, which I thanked them for.
I got most of the deck done yesterday and today.

And I scared poor momma dove yesterday!
I had to carry all 60 deck boards from the driveway to the back yard. I made about 20 trips, carrying 3 boards at a time.
As I was turning around to drop a load of boards, I hit a lantern that was beside her nest!
I didn’t hurt her, but she wasn’t sticking around when I started sawing!
But she did come back to the nest!
Here she is giving me some side eye! Notice the babies poking out from underneath. They barely fit!

Brings back memories Phil. In another life I raised and raced pigeons. Larger than doves, yet so similar. Two eggs per nest, always. These guys would be about ready for banding. A buddy of mine once slid a couple of dove eggs under a nesting hen. They hatched and when they matured they would fly with the pigeons when released. It was fun to watch.

So, this morning I went out to give the baby birds a piece of bread. One of the babies flew off!
And the other had flown off by the time I got home this afternoon. 😢
Good thing, because we had a visitor this afternoon!
A black snake!
He crawled up the handle of a shovel and went up to another nest above the doves’
Luckily, that nest has been empty for a while, so no dinner for snaky!3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg3A586585-4A3B-4F9C-BE7F-A2F4FBFEE842.jpeg9A3105BD-F0AB-47BC-8165-EF9FEEA2360E.jpeg9D5BA362-538C-46AA-8A01-A1A9761A406C.jpeg88239176-04FB-42BA-9E5F-1676BF7625EA.jpeg7C207A03-3D41-408D-AB39-B7114BFE0A83.jpegBB0EA9F8-A8D1-41B8-8997-233331077DEC.jpeg

My wife would have had a conniption fit! Give a snake legs and call it a lizard, she is fine, snakes? Oh sweet Lord Jesus NO!

I have been “enjoying” serious road construction in front of my house and seeing a fair bit of iron going to the scrapyard. Took a few minutes chatting with the foreman and I think there might be a couple of catch basins showing up for fire pit construction soon. Of course that means I need to enlarge my patio some. More pavers and some sand, not an expensive project but it will be easier when it stops raining!
