Curb Alert !!!

Thoughts on this 4 burner Summit? I absolutely know nothing about these. I think Chris Allingham has one. Looks older but seller says it’s in good shape. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

I just took a look at some old threads and it sounds like it has a 4 piece fire box. If that’s bad your deep into your pockets. Does anyone happen to know if this is 1st gen or 2nd gen?

Thanks @Jon Tofte. I’m going to take a ride to take a look at this grill today mostly because it’s a nice ride down the coast of Lake Michigan (1 hour drive from where I am today) and out of curiosity. Bruce mentioned that these grills are hard to get parts for and can be an expensive rebuild. Is there any insight you can give for important things to look for that a mere novice like myself would miss? Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

I just found your restore thread on the summit 450, @Jon Tofte. I’m going to take a look at it and gather what I can from it. Whew. From what I seen so far, this is a totally different animal than the genesis X000s.

Very different, but a much higher quality grill. The one big weakness is the porcelain coated steel firebox front and back. As long as the one you are looking at only has minor burn-through, the stainless panels I sell can remedy that as you can see in that thread. Another thing to look at are the holders for the flavorizer bars. They can be purchased, but cost more than that grill!

I LOVE my 1st generation Summit!

Thanks Jon. I am reading your rebuild thread now. WOW! Meticulous work and dedication. Very impressive. I seen your solution with the SS plates, I will definitely reach out if/ when needed. I am going to take a nice drive down the coast this afternoon and take a look at this grill. If the grill is in decent shape I will pick it up. I’m afraid I may over look something and basically end up wasting money and throwing it to the curb, per se. But…as many of us know, Weberitis is a real, and in most cases, an acute condition. The cure, I’ve heard is money and more grills. 😀

@Paul Maul If come across the right first generation Summit I'm going to grab it for restoration.

I kind of think Weberitis is a gift. Kind of like common sense not everybody has it. Being smart and savvy and having a higher level of intelligence is nothing to be ashamed of. I celebrate my Websitis. I'm thankful for this gift of reason and sanity where rational thinking and decisions are crystal clear.

At least this is what I tell my wife.

🤣 I have to remember to use that rationale when explaining my condition. You do have to be smart and saavy. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m either on the start of this journey. I have a lot to learn. I’m going to really take a look at this grill to the point where I want the guy to be annoyed. As Bruce said these can turn into a rabbit hole. We’ll see what happens.
You know, I think we live in totally different climates. You’re in AZ and I’m in MI. I’m pretty sure right out of the gate that your climate definitely helps out in finding “cleaner” grills then us folks up north.

But my primary residences is in Washington State. That's where I get most of my grills. It does rain a lot here but the grills still seem to come up in pretty good shape compared to some other places.

I suspect it's the large swing in temperatures that promote rust here in the upper midwest. The only other variable I can think of is the accumulated pollution we get in industrial areas, but that's quite a stretch.

Yeah it's really hard to say but the moisture with the large temperature swings could definitely play a role.

Oh I thought you were getting the grills from AZ. I think one of the biggest factors with certain components is keeping the grill clean. A bad design, is a bad design and those lead to failures no amount of cleaning will help. But for things like drip pans, trays, FBs, burners, etc. cleaning helps a lot. Learned that a long time ago with my kettle.

Well, I live outside of Detroit. I know about the industrial areas and pollution. Look up Zug Island. That’s why I head way up North anytime I can.
