Bought a Weber Smokey Mountain 1880 (14.5")

Hello,

This is my first post here but I have been lurking for a while.

Craigslist has treated me well the past few weeks. 3 weekends ago, I scored a like new 22.5" OTG for $20, and today I scored a 14.5" Weber Smokey Mountain Model 1880!

I got luck on this 2 days after it was posted because Weber was misspelled, and it was in a remote area of Boston Massachusetts. At first, I was reluctant to pick it up, but after the poster eluded to it being a little smaller than the current models, and that the dimensions were 30"x 15" I was quick to pull the trigger!

This is my first smoker, I've been grilling for a while, but have yet to get into slow n low. I don't know what I am gonna do with it yet. I am gonna smoke some stuff on it for sure before I decide to keep it.

The smoker is in great shape with hardly any rust. The owner said he used it 3 times. It came with everything and the original cooking manual from 1981. The date stamp is "E" so it was made in 1983.

Are there any other 1880 owners out there? So far I have only heard of three other current owners in the online forums.

Lawrence, What an AWESOME find! to say I am jealous would be a HUGE understatement! Post some pics of the first cook, I would love to see the little gem in action!

Awesome find man. Please post more pictures. What a treasure. I found a 22.5 kettle on craigslist with wooden handles too but this find takes the prize!!

Hi Lawrence,

Nice find! Did it include the lower cooking grate? I have yet to see an 1880 that did. If so, can you take a photo of it in place inside the cooker and post it?

Yes, it does have the lower cooking grate directly above the water pan. Ill post mote pics later when I get home. Cheers!

I'm really pleased to see that lower grate. I did not know that it sits within the rim of the water pan. Mine is missing and like I said earlier in this thread, I've never seen it in photos posted by others.

Lawrence you are going to be tempted to clean it up & keep as an artifact of last century.
It's a Weber it was built to be used!
Although not big it's the same size as the mini smokers we make on the forum & will cook 2 butts or 4 small chickens or 3 racks BB ribs.

@John- I plan to thoroughly clean it up and take some higher quality pictures of it since its such a gem. THEN,I am gonna cook my first butt on it!

@Chris- My manual looks the same, less the revision number at the end. It's interesting that they kept the baby bullet on the covers so long after they were discontinued.
 
Great score! I guess there are still a few of these out there... it gives me incentive to keep checking Craiglist.

Keep looking, Larry! I have heard of a few on craigslist in the past few weeks alone. Must be spring cleaning or something.
