For what its worth, using Parkay squeeze butter is applied with brown sugar, honey etc. to ribs in the 3-2-1 method. It's well documented on the net.

If you are getting a good bark without using a binder then there is no reason to add a binder. I can see the theory of less waste or a cleaner kitchen by using a binder however mustard can be pretty messy too! I’m ok with a little waste and mess... it’s part of the fun!
