Beer can chicken minus the can.

Bought a beer can chicken holder last week at Big lots and thought I'd give it a test run. I seasoned the chicken with Cavender's salt free greek seasoning, kosher salt, and EVOO and fresh lemon.

Got the "beer" can ready.

I used Royal Oak lump and cherry wood. Earlier in the week I scrounged up some cherry wood from a local orchard. I had to cut the branches into chunks and had no saw. So I went to Harbor Freight and bought this for $20.

I placed the chicken on the grill and soon realized that it was too tall and the lid wouldn't fit! So I ended up removing the can.

Cooked chicken till it reached 165. I tried using a kabob stick to hold the wings together.

Served up the chicken with sauteed spinach and buttered spaghetti with salad supreme seasoning. Everything turned out well I really liked the greek seasoning. Thanks for looking.

Looks really good. My wife won't let me use anything with msg, but my mom used Cavender's all the time growing up for baked chicken. The chickens sit lower on the grill if you just stand them on the can without the beercan rack.

Man that makes me hungry..I am so jealous of great plated pics like that...I'm going to drown my emotions right NOW with a beer... Good job.. I am also a big fan of Cavenders salt-free...got it on my short ribs right now!

Dave, thanks for the tip on placing the chicken on the lower grate.;) According to Amazon Cavender's salt free is also MSG free. The salted version does have MSG listed as one of the ingredients.

yes MSG is in that one, which for people is doesn't affect in a negative way, like me, is great...seems like all rubs have salt as #1 ingredient which is why I use the salt free...use dueling rubs and the food is too salty. Great stuff, both versions if used correctly!

I use the salted version on rice with chili sesame oil and garlic powder...all the rage!!

Chicken looks great Jason, I had so many grill lids siting on top of my beer can chicken, I would suggest to purchase the smallest bird possible. Now that I have a WSM, I do all of my beer can on it. I did have a buddy tell me that he cooked his beer can chicken with it sitting on the charcoal grate of his OTG.

Great looking meal!
Apart from that let's face it, the bear can method is actually not a great way to make the best tasting, juicy chicken. Visually nice, and for some it will trigger some thoughts that might bring out a smile, but it is better to omit the can if you want the best meat. The can stops airflow, acts like a temperature barriere, sort of a temperature condenser, and forces you to cook your chicken from the outside and in, leaving the meat less juicy.

Now, the looks of a beer can chicken might compensate this. It looks kind of funny.
