Backyard Grill Charcoal

Lew, Backyard Grill is as easy to light as KBB. Differences are lower cost, less white smoke, less ash, and less binders.
The binders part means it does not hold together as well KBB. But... the tradeoff is certainly worth it.

Sounds good to me! Bob, if you've ever tried Stubbs, how would it compare with the BG from WW, other than in the shape/size and price difference?

I see store brands, Best Choice, etc all over the place, and they state 60% larger, and with ridges.
There is no doubt in my mind that they are all made by Royal Oak.
Even Lampe's recent cook with RO Chef's Select has the same ridges, and I'm guessing is larger.

Now the question is, do they use a different formula for the RO Chef's Select, since it states 100% hardwood?
My guess is yes.

Are all the others the same, but with binders?
My guess is yes after reading this thread, post 27.
Even though a RO rep said they are all the same.

The Backyard Grill stuff looks like the old Walmart Sam's brand.

I have only used the old RO Chef's Select, before ridges, and thought it was really good.
Still have a bag, if I ever dig it out from behind my KBB, Stubb's, KC, and various stock of lump.
Never tried regular RO briqs, by any name, that I can recall.

I have used Stubbs and do on occasion still run it, although we're out of stock on it at the present time.
Backyard Grill works equally well compared to Stubbs. If I remember correctly (an ol age thing <g>),
Backyard Grill seemed to smoke less than Stubbs.

Very cool. Thanks!

I've been gone today too much to cook, but I did a little test burn with Stubbs, b&b oak briqs, and Backyard Grill. Yes, the BG briqs smoked less than the other two....and also slower.

Thanks for the tip and review. Always been a KBB kind of guy, but may give some other options a go this season.

I believe I've seen this stuff in my local wally.

The don't stink, but they also don't burn very hot.

This is more from a grilling perspective, but I'm grilling a few chicken thighs indirect on the Performer. I lit somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 a chimney's worth to fully ashed over to make a nice tight single layer bed on half the grate. With the vent directly over the seven thighs opposite that the gauge hasn't gone over 350.

i cooked low and slow with the backyard yard stuff on my rib cook last week that went about 6 hours and i still had a good amount left..in my opinion there was less ash then kbb,im actually using the left over briquettes from the rib cook on a couple legs of lamb as i type this... i would def buy the backyard stuff again

I think it's a great choice for most smokes or grilling when you don't need too much in temp or longevity. In other words, a great replacement for Kbb.
