First off I'll address pellet grills et al, I LOVE THEM!!!! I have 2. A Member's Mark Pro Series pellet grill and Big Z. I love both the grills. The MM does not have WIFI/Bluetooth. And I thought that would be over kill. Now? Given what I've learned about pellet grills is being without that capability is kind of crippling as to how much you can use them (or how easily).
Now as for which one I'd buy again? I would not buy a Z again. (especially this huge one I have). A couple shortcomings, it's too large for it's burn capability. The algorithm on it's PID controller has a tough time keeping up with cold weather. Now at lower smoking temps it's not an issue. But, when I'm doing say a cowboy steak. I like to get some nice smoke on them before I get a crust on them.. So I'll run the grill at 220 or sometimes even "super smoke" setting. But then once the meat comes up to 95-100/110 I want the grill to come up to around 400. But, if it's cold especially add wind in the mix, it cannot burn fast enough to climb much past 300/325. You could leave it set to 450 i.e. and it will sit there like a rock at 325. I've tried different pellets, changing the direction of the vents, and much more. 0 zip nada. No luck.
The latest thing I am going to play around with is using foil to help block the rear venting partially. We've had a couple colder snaps, and I've tried this. It does seem to be working better. So, I'm thinking I may make some "shutters" as I do think part of the issue is there is WAY too much venting per sq in of grill space. Much more than I've seen in other grills it's size.
Another issue with it is just plain awful customer support.
Now, they build a REALLY high quality product not backed up well or controlled well. A lot of other companies call upon them to build their grills i.e. Green Mountain, some Traegers, and a few other companies actually use Z Grills and simply add in their own electronics.
Another idea I'm playing with. Going with another company's controller, and perhaps upgrading my auger motor to one of the slightly higher speed more powerful replacements. So it can feed more pellets in faster when it needs them.
If I decide to follow some of these changes I'll post about them in the pellet grills section.
Or I may just bite the bullet and buy something else though if I did the first thing it smokes might be my DOA body
once my wife is done with me
