7 Day Kingsford Briquette Life Expectancy??!!

Hi Smoke Lovers, I just wanted to pass on this event that recently happened to me. I Smoked an Eye of Round, Chicken pieces & sausages, it was about 3 hrs of Smoking. After my cooks, I usually close off all 3 bottom vents & top vent of my WSM Cooker 18.5”, leave it out of my shed to cool down before putting back in shed for the night. I did all of this & didn’t get back to clean out ash, grill etc for 7 days (Fri-Fri). As I was dumping the spent Kingsford ash into plastic bags, it was smoking from the heat & they were still very Hot! I was shocked, the weather has been a little warmer (40-50F) but, these coals should have burned out overnight! Unbelievable, Beware

This may be a bit dangerous but when I finish with my 14.5 WSM I set the lower bowl with the remaining charcoal into my kettle to extinguish the coals. If there isn't too much remaining I'll remove the charcoal grade with a tongs along with the charcoal ring and dump the ash into the kettle.
This allows me to clean up the WSM that evening and my kettle does a much better job of putting out the coals. My WSM has too many air leaks so it takes too long and I don't want to leave it unattended all night.

I don’t get it, maybe I’m really lucky but, if I shut down all the vents on my WSM, it’s out in a matter of a couple hours. Not cold but certainly extinguished. You guys that have leaks like that makes me think that the units are much more leaky than mine.
Just my observation.
I can dump ash the next day on almost every cook I’ve done. I think I need to break the puppy out and get it fired up for a butt cook!

I only ran into that when using the K-Pro.
That stuff just kept burning till it was gone, I dunno about 7 days.. Maybe the buildup of ash might stay hot.

That seems pretty extreme, but I guess it's possible. My wsm will go out after closing the vents. I wait til the next day (or if I'm being honest much later) to dump it.

The charcoals got nothing to do with it, it's the air. You still had enough air supply to keep it smoldering. It won't burn without air. I have set a plastic trash bag on fire before dumping day+ old coals into them that were not out completely .... From a different smoker that did not seal off as tight as my WSM. One of the reasons I keep a metal trash can just for spent coals / ashes and I keep it away from the house. My WSM goes out eventually just closing the top vent. One bottom vent where my blower goes is left open and there's of course leakage by the door corners..... It still burns out

That's why it's good practice to use a metal can and dump some water on the ashes and give them a stir.
That also avoids getting a face full of flyaway ash.

Before I had my Weber stash I used K-Pro all the time and never had what you described and I would know cause I used it in my UDS for smoking and always had coals to burn for the next time adding more for the next smoke. I do make sure all the vents are closed though.

I’ve been Smoking with this unit for 6-7yrs & have noticed that one vent is not as tight as the others & has loosened up from when it was new. Also, this is the first time this has happened but, if I just keep all vents open after the Cook, it will definitely burn out overnight. I will just leave it out of shed overnight & expend all coals. Thank You for your thoughts!

Oh one last thing, anybody know how to tighten a loose vent or can you replace it? Thanks. D

Brian this was like 10 - 12 years ago when they first came out with that formula ( could be different now)
Edit: Senior moment. It was back in 2009.
I bought alot at the end of the year on clearance and I could never save any on my WSM or OTG.
Weird cause I could save RO briqs and lump NP..

I've got a small metal trash can as well that has a lid. I use that. Sometimes I dump used coals in a plastic home depot 5 gallon bucket which isn't the greatest idea, but I do that to reuse them later.

Nothing wrong with Senior Moments by the way. They probably changed the name 3 or 4 times have not used it in about 3 years as when the Weber blowout happened I bought enough to last about 4 years got 7 bags left best stuff I have ever used but again my use of charcoal is maybe 1-2 times a month mostly in the performer. I will go back to the K stuff from Costco when the Weber stuff is gone as my experience was it worked fine and the price when Costco has a sale is hard to beat but I am not one of these guys where I am anal about charcoal had plenty of good cooks with regular KBB which some people hate I noticed no difference besides the fact it burns faster in the food I cooked. :)
