You can always use a wood dye as well (different than a stain). Then you can add a tint of whatever color you want to the finish. Transtint is one I have used on some woodworking I’ve done.

If you can find someone to bead blast or sand blast the firebox, it keeps a great texture and is very easy to paint. It can be a bit pricier, maybe $50 for a box and end caps. It really makes the inside look fantastic, at least till the first cook :)

I had my firebox soda blasted, and had them do my lower wire rack as well. It turned out really nice. If you can find someone to blast the rack, I would say it is worthwhile.
