YeeHa! I finally got my Weber!

Hey everyone!

Pleasure to be here, and more than happy to to be a helpful member of the group.

I've always wanted a Weber, but could never really justify the price. I have been VERY frustrated with various other grills I've purchased over the years (uneven heating), and in hindsight I just should have bucked up and bought a Weber years ago! Hindsight is always 20:20! LOL!

Anywho, I guess the Gods above finally smiled down on me, as the other day I was on my way home and at a house a few blocks from where I currently live, I saw a large pile of furniture and misc other items out at the curb. I stopped to inquire because mixed in with all the stuff I spotted a Weber grill!

A very nice woman emerged and when I asked her, she said anything I want, is mine for the taking! I asked her to hold the grill for me and I rushed home, returned with my trailer, and I now I'm finally the proud owner of a Weber, and you can't beat the price - FREE! Now I don't mind putting some time into it, and if it costs me a couple of hundred bucks in parts, so what, I'll have a LIKE NEW Weber for Dirt Cheap!

Turned out to be a Genesis Silver C, and it's in pretty good shape, too!

The Flavorizer bars were gone, and things like the swinging warm up basket and the warming rack are rusted beyond repair.

After inspecting the gaseous system from a safety perspective it looked to be in pretty good shape, so I connected a propane tank and it fired right up. The burner crossover tube is a bit rotted so I'll replace the whole shooting match with respect to the three burner pipes and the crossover tube itself. That way I'm assured proper heat distribution, in spite of the fact that the burner tubes themselves seem to perform pretty good.

One of the small casters is broken, but again no big deal! Other than that it's just filthy, but nothing a little elbow grease, paint and so on, can't overcome. Gonna tear it completely apart and completely restore it to Like New condition!

I'll post some pics, but a question I have is that I found an ebay seller who has a kit which includes both a stainless set of flavorizer bars, and a complete burner kit for only $41.00 (go here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/122064329215?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649 ) Has anyone out there purchased from this seller, and found their products to be a suitable replacement with respect to quality and performance?

Here's my new Genesis Silver C as obtained:

Whoops, looks like I can't just attach pics, and I don't have a host URL, so I'll have to figure out how to deal with that first.

Thanks for any input on my new project.

Regards,
GT

Welcome to the form Gerhard. This is a great place to hang out and share. The people here are quite knowledgeable and willing to help. Many of us have rehabbed old Genesis grills and you will have many years of use from them. My Genesis 1000 is 20 years old and should give me many, many more years of faithful service.

You might want to check out RCPlanebuyer on ebay for stainless steel flavorizer bars and grates. Might be a little more money but his stuff will last a very long time and is the goto for many on this forum.

For posting pics and other info, check out the FAQ icon on the top of this page. Click on that link and you will find much useful info.

Welcome to the forum Gerhard. Bob is right Rcplanebuyer on EBay has the best of the best when it comes to SS parts from Grates to flavorizer bars, truly great stuff. I've rehabbed about 7 or 8 of the genesis grills and still have my 1999 genesis 1000 that I bought new and is now a 2000. I purchased my flavorizer bars from RCplanebuyer about 8 or 9 years ago and they still look like new.
Also ereplacmentparts is a great source for parts for your rehab.
Good luck with your new grill you're going to love it.

Welcome Gerhard. X3 on RCPlaneBuyers products. They are fun to rehab, I've done 2 so far. Post up some pictures when you can.

Gerard, welcome to the forum. It's the place to learn and have lots of fun. Your going to love the Genesis and it will last a long time after you get it rebuilt. Like Rich said we have had ours since 1999 and that baby is still cooking some great dinners along with all the rest of the Weber's.

Nice snag Gerard, congrats and welcome to the Weber family!! Can't voice an opinion on the burners and bars that you posted as I've no personal experience with them. As others have noted, RC is the "go to" guy around here, all his work is top notch and usually less expensive (and better) than what you can get from Weber. Long story short, it very well might come down to cash flow versus value. Spend more up front for a quality product that will last a loooooong time, or perhaps go easy on the wallet now, but have to replace the same parts in a couple of years. In the end, you will have to decide what is best for your situation.

The grill you picked up looks to be a 2005ish model Genesis Silver C. "Silver" has a Porcelain grill hood whereas "Gold" has a stainless steel hood. "C" models have 3 main burner tubes and the side burner, whereas "B" models have 3 main tubes and no side burner, and "A" models have 2 main burners and no side burner. So, black porcelain hood, 3 burners and a side burner = Genesis Silver C.

I'm feeling particularly wordy today, and your enthusiasm and joy has struck a bit of a nerve (in a good way). Luck has it that the grill you stumbled into is the last model year of the last generation of truly great Weber grills. Many here would argue that much earlier generations like the 1000-5000 series are the best. I won't argue with them. That said, the Silver/Gold A/B/C models are absolute rock solid, dependable and long lasting workhorses.

Get her cleaned up so you can see what really needs to be done to get her fixed up nicely. I see that the crossover tube is rusted out (that's the tube running front to back connecting the three burners). Do yourself a favor and actually check the 3 main burner tubes. Tap all around on each tube to see if they are still solid, or if they too have holes and are rusting through. Chances are, they might still be solid and just in need of a good cleaning. If so, you can buy a new crossover tube for just over $10
on Amazon.

The guys are right about the flavorizer bars and grates from RC Plane Buyer on EBAY. They cost more, but they are certainly heavy duty and worth the extra expense.
