WSM 14.5 in snow 12 degrees 20 below windchill - chicken wings

Decided to dust off the 14.5 WSM, well actually shovel it out. The wind was gusting to 35 mph and the temp started at 5 degrees and finally hit almost 20!

Doing 15 chicken wings on the WSM and 15 on the Silver B (the wife doesn't like smoked chicken). I had to not only shovel off the the cooker but then I had to shovel a way to my charcoal supply and the wood chips i keep in trash cans. I probably have about 200 pounds of charcoal left. I really packed the wings in on the top shelf, there are 10 of them there and the bottom had 5. 10 is about all I can get without stacking them on each shelf. They came out great! But was I happy to get inside.
I ran the 14.5 about 300 for 3 hours, although it took almost an hour to get up to that temp. After 3 hours it started to drop.

I only cooked the wings for 50 minutes, but I wanted to see how the WSM responded to the cold and wind since I am doing ribs tomorrow for the Superbowl, although it is supposed to be warm out, around 30!

Jeff;
Those are some really good lookin' wings. Of late, I have been cooking all of my chicken parts on my WSM's using Chris' "Hot and Fast" Chicken method (no water pan, using only the top grate).

I have been "guilty" of grilling and smoking in the snow, but don't know if I would brave those temps or not:rolleyes:. Good for you!

Keep on smokin',

WSM 2-1-1/2 ribs

Since Superbowl Sunday was a lot warmer, 22 degrees and only a little wind I threw a rack of ribs on the 14.5. I found the 14.5 wanted to run about 250, no water in the bowl, so I decided to do 2 hours unwrapped, 1 hour wrapped and then 1/2 hour unwrapped. I coated them with McCormacks Smokehouse maple and brown sugar and then for the wrapped part I put BBQ sauce on them. The were a bit over if it was a competition but my wife and son's love the fall off the bone ribs, they came out great!

Nice work jeff! Nothing beats throwing down on a nice,sunny ,cold, snow day! It makes you humble and really take advantage of the spring day cooks.

Great looking cooks Jeff! But now I know why I moved to Arizona, in my old age that white stuff makes me shiver just looking out the window at it!
