Why does everyone install handles on their smokers vertically instead of horizontally? I'm just curious so I can decide how I want to install mine.
I don't know why some folks mount them vertically but I will add that according to this link not everyone does so:

Metal knobs... conductivity? Unless you plan on some kind of insulator...scorched fingers might be...”unpleasant”.Yeah I like that knob idea also. I don’t see why a couple of metal knobs would not work on a 22. The center section is really not that much heavier than a 18. Think I may just have to make a run to the hardware store today.
I move my 22" around a fair amount and am 100% OK without handles. I can't recall taking the barrel off during a cook, or when hot, but I've got welding gloves and a reasonably sure grip. I think either handle orientation would work OK. I would lean toward vertical handles it seems like that way you'd have a little less strain on your wrists when lifting.
I did the same. Prefer horizontal, bent aluminum and added Weber handles.I bent some aluminum bar stock I had and riveted it to the WSM. I added weber handles to it. It works for me.View attachment 27027 View attachment 27028View attachment 27026
Where did you get that hinge from? I'd like to get one but all the ones I've seen are really expensiveI did the same. Prefer horizontal, bent aluminum and added Weber handles. View attachment 27550
