The more I think about it, the more I regret leaving that set of 9930's on the Jack Daniels grill when I sold it. Yeah, I've got more of them but that was a three piece set for the smoker box and I've never seen another set like it. View attachment 123118
I know that you already know this, Steve, but just for observation, you could do the same to a regular set, if the need came up. Just cut-off wheel in two places. I did it on a 300 I sold because I wanted the removable GBS section to center over the "sear" section like it should have. I had to cut in three places because of the center support:

It worked out nice, because the small piece made a perfect place to install an non-OEM smoker box:

That is kind of what I want to do on my forever grill. I personally like the smoker boxes on the OG deep cookboxes, but I am wanting to modify the original steam n chips box to work with a silver cookbox. And come up with a way to not necessarily hinge them, but to link them so they can be flipped up out of the way.
If I can find a heavy enough SS chain link that would fit around the grates, I can notch and bend it, just inside the outer supports on each side, then bend it back and weld it on the bottom it would allow the smaller grate to be flipped to access the box.

I know, there is a lot of "meh" feelings of the internal smoke boxes on this site, but I have had great results on my 330, and F it, I like it! lol

Cody, I actually agree that these boxes do have some positive benefit. I would love to do a "Myth Buster" comparing where the smoker box is an inch below the grate level vs. the Weber design with the openable lid at grate level. Having that door that allows adding more chips/pellets seems without disturbing a cook seems really nice. Some say there IS a big difference. I don't know but would love to test two grills side by side.

For your idea of doing a smoker box on a Silver, you might look at some of the "plain" non-OEM versions out there. Probably would be easier to adapt than one designed for a double-row firebox.

This one is currently a bargain:

Here's a cast iron one that looks shallow enough and is currently at a giveaway price:

You can tell your wife it is my fault!

I have a few from the 3rd gen summits that I can hack up. I liked how the smoke boxes set on the flavor bars on the sidewinders (which I have one that is BNIB that will go in a sidewinder) that I am thinking I want to model this off of. I think the chips sitting on the hot flavor bar will have a better smoke effect. I also have some scrap stainless panels sitting around via that monster Wolf I scrapped out.

I don't know why you would waste your time with those boxes when a smoke tube works so much better... whether pellets or chips. I've never gotten consistent smoke out of a box compared to what a tube does.

Placement of the Smoke Box or tube is less important than where the meat is in relation to the exhaust vent of the grill... I've already convinced myself of that long ago -- having a raised rate at or near the exhaust vent at the back is the best I found so far regardless of whether the smoke tube is on the grate or under it

I have tried a V shaped smoke box and the flat style like Jon posted. I have also tried the smoke tube with pellets. That is my favorite. I have a hard time keeping the wood chips in the V smoker or the flat one lit and burning/smoldering unless they are right over or near a flame. That inherently means it will need to be under the grates. And then they seem to totally catch fire at some point and that isn't good either as they burn up quick with little smoke and send the internal grill temp way up. The smoke tube and pellets just seems to work soo much better. But it requires pellets over real raw wood.

Some experiences may vary. I’ve had a smoke tube that I was less than impressed with. Using both chips and pellets. A couple times with pellets I’ve had them just cook off and burn the piss out of the skin of my chickens.

The only thing I question is if the E/W burners would concentrate enough heat to really get them going.

Have you tried mounting one in a Silver yet? I know you had to remove a short flavorizer bar on a Genesis 1000 and slide the bracket through two of the long ones to mount it. I know the profile of the flavorizer bars are different between the two grills though so maybe it won't be that simple.
