I agree 100%. I’m not a fan of the look either and for that price I could have two sets of Dave’s.Yeah I don't think they would look right on a nicely restored Classic Weber.

I don’t disagree. I’m sure once they heat up they’ll sear steaks with the best of them… if I had a friend with a water jet CNC I’d buy the material to cut them to give them a try. lolI probably won't end up getting a set but I bet they work really well.
That grill deserved that kind of quality. The more I think about it, the more I regret leaving that set of 9930's on the Jack Daniels grill when I sold it. Yeah, I've got more of them but that was a three piece set for the smoker box and I've never seen another set like it. View attachment 123118
It did, and those were the grates it was born with. Thanks, I feel better nowThat grill deserved that kind of quality.
Man those grills are spendy! Talking new car money! If you've ever watched the show Mexico One Plate at a Time with Chicago chef/native Rick Bayless he uses one of these https://kalamazoogourmet.com/products/grills/hybrid-fire-grill/ and it has grates just like that. Honestly if I'm looking for "performance" and nothing more........I'd love those grates
Yeah he sure has it though and of course he's "sponsored" by them as well. But man that thing is pretty coolMan those grills are spendy! Talking new car money!
I know that you already know this, Steve, but just for observation, you could do the same to a regular set, if the need came up. Just cut-off wheel in two places. I did it on a 300 I sold because I wanted the removable GBS section to center over the "sear" section like it should have. I had to cut in three places because of the center support:The more I think about it, the more I regret leaving that set of 9930's on the Jack Daniels grill when I sold it. That is kind of what I want to do on my forever grill. I personally like the smoker boxes on the OG deep cookboxes, but I am wanting to modify the original steam n chips box to work with a silver cookbox. And come up with a way to not necessarily hinge them, but to link them so they can be flipped up out of the way.I know that you already know this, Steve, but just for observation, you could do the same to a regular set, if the need came up. It worked out nice, because the small piece made a perfect place to install an non-OEM smoker box:

Cody, I actually agree that these boxes do have some positive benefit. I would love to do a "Myth Buster" comparing where the smoker box is an inch below the grate level vs. the Weber design with the openable lid at grate level. Having that door that allows adding more chips/pellets seems without disturbing a cook seems really nice. Some say there IS a big difference. I don't know but would love to test two grills side by side. That is kind of what I want to do on my forever grill. If I can find a heavy enough SS chain link that would fit around the grates, I can notch and bend it, just inside the outer supports on each side, then bend it back and weld it on the bottom it would allow the smaller grate to be flipped to access the box.
I know, there is a lot of "meh" feelings of the internal smoke boxes on this site, but I have had great results on my 330, and F it, I like it! lol
Some experiences may vary. I’ve had a smoke tube that I was less than impressed with. Using both chips and pellets. A couple times with pellets I’ve had them just cook off and burn the piss out of the skin of my chickens.I don't know why you would waste your time with those boxes when a smoke tube works so much better... whether pellets or chips. I've never gotten consistent smoke out of a box compared to what a tube does.
Placement of the Smoke Box or tube is less important than where the meat is in relation to the exhaust vent of the grill... I've already convinced myself of that long ago -- having a raised rate at or near the exhaust vent at the back is the best I found so far regardless of whether the smoke tube is on the grate or under it
Have you tried mounting one in a Silver yet? I know you had to remove a short flavorizer bar on a Genesis 1000 and slide the bracket through two of the long ones to mount it. I know the profile of the flavorizer bars are different between the two grills though so maybe it won't be that simple. That is kind of what I want to do on my forever grill. My experience is that the tubes work well over a burner on low with maybe a one to two percent chance of flaming. Now if you put it over a burner on medium ore high go up greatly --- that's with the tube on top of the grates - if you put it on the flavor bars you're in trouble if you have the burner on anything but low underneath the tube. Using chips you need to be tamp them into the tube - if you leave them in there loosely the odds of them chain burning go up greatly. And never rely on the burners to start the chips or pellets to smolder - always use a torch to get a good Cherry going at the top of the tube. Some experiences may vary. The only thing I question is if the E/W burners would concentrate enough heat to really get them going.
