Weber Genesis Skyline 1200 - My first old gasser refurb

I've refurbished a few of the newer "sidewinder" Genesis grills and a handful of the newer Spirit models, but this is my first classic Genesis refurb. I typically stick to fixing up charcoal grills since there are less moving parts.

The buy/sell market is pretty slow right now and I found this grill for sale on FB Marketplace for $45. It appeared to have no missing pieces and even had the elusive condiment bin. The guy I bought it from said he originally purchased when he lived in Louisiana and moved it with him to Atlanta when he relocated years ago. I asked him if he knew what the Skyline model was and he said "it's just a regular Weber."

I got it home and took it apart to assess what parts I could save and what parts I needed to buy new. The only parts I needed to replace were the cooking grates, igniter, thermometer and the small grease tray. I had an extra igniter and thermometer laying around so I just ended up ordering these two products:

$38.99 for the grates - I just went with the cheapest SS rod grates that had decent reviews

$16.99 for the grease tray, again it was cheap and had decent reviews

I also ended up having to order these since I only had 1.25" ones on hand:

And I used this to get the inside of the firebox cleaned up after learning about it from another thread here:

I also swapped over a regulator from an old Silver A grill...swapped the "quick connect" propane for the standard screw on/off.
And I replaced a majority of the nuts and bolts with stainless steel ones. I already have a tackle box full of those, and I do that will all my grills.

Here are some BEFORE pictures:

It wasn't too bad to restore. Just a little more time consuming since there are much more parts to a gas grill versus something like a charcoal Performer.
I used flat Rustoleum High Heat spray paint for the outside of the fire box, 2 coats.
Semi-gloss Rustleum High Heat spray paint for the outside of the lid sides, 2 coats.
I cleaned and sanded these areas very well, then did a final clean with Xylol, painted once it was dry.

For the frame, wire rack and all the other exterior parts I used basic Rustoleum Semi-Gloss, not high heat.

The Carbon Off gel product was great for getting the inside of the fire box cleaned. Sure beats using the angle grinder! I only used the angle grinder to clean up the flavor bars and the little warming tray grates.
Here is a thread about Carbon Off:

Exceeded my picture limit, here is the final product. I wasn't going for a showroom quality grill like some of you guys do. I just didn't think the extra effort would net me any additional profit.
(Just ignore the crossover tube and middle burner not being installed correctly...just didn't have a pic with is on there all the way)

My original intent was to flip this grill. About 2 months ago I bought and cleaned up a Weber Performer for my mother-in-law. She said she grew up cooking on a charcoal grill and loved the way food tasted. So I gave her one. A couple months go by and my wife says he mom has used the grill once and that she just keeps using her old junker gas grill instead because it's easier to cook on.
So this grill is going to my mother-in-law and she is giving the Performer back to me.
I was curious what a grill like this would sell for in my market, but that will have to wait until another time when I decide to fix up another one.

Very nice! I guess you can still consider yourself a member of the Skyline Club since it is staying in the extended family. That’s a good story, and I am glad your mother-in-law will be getting something a even cooler than just a “regular Weber.” 😊

Yeah, who knows....maybe a few years down the road the grill will make it back my way. Certainly won't let her get rid of it.
I didn't realize Weber only made this style for a couple years.
