I've refurbished a few of the newer "sidewinder" Genesis grills and a handful of the newer Spirit models, but this is my first classic Genesis refurb. I typically stick to fixing up charcoal grills since there are less moving parts.
The buy/sell market is pretty slow right now and I found this grill for sale on FB Marketplace for $45. It appeared to have no missing pieces and even had the elusive condiment bin. The guy I bought it from said he originally purchased when he lived in Louisiana and moved it with him to Atlanta when he relocated years ago. I asked him if he knew what the Skyline model was and he said "it's just a regular Weber."
I got it home and took it apart to assess what parts I could save and what parts I needed to buy new. The only parts I needed to replace were the cooking grates, igniter, thermometer and the small grease tray. I had an extra igniter and thermometer laying around so I just ended up ordering these two products:
$38.99 for the grates - I just went with the cheapest SS rod grates that had decent reviews

$16.99 for the grease tray, again it was cheap and had decent reviews
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FQ6PKPG/?tag=tvwb-20
I also ended up having to order these since I only had 1.25" ones on hand:

And I used this to get the inside of the firebox cleaned up after learning about it from another thread here:

I also swapped over a regulator from an old Silver A grill...swapped the "quick connect" propane for the standard screw on/off.
And I replaced a majority of the nuts and bolts with stainless steel ones. I already have a tackle box full of those, and I do that will all my grills.
Here are some BEFORE pictures:
It wasn't too bad to restore. Just a little more time consuming since there are much more parts to a gas grill versus something like a charcoal Performer.
I used flat Rustoleum High Heat spray paint for the outside of the fire box, 2 coats.
Semi-gloss Rustleum High Heat spray paint for the outside of the lid sides, 2 coats.
I cleaned and sanded these areas very well, then did a final clean with Xylol, painted once it was dry.
For the frame, wire rack and all the other exterior parts I used basic Rustoleum Semi-Gloss, not high heat.
The Carbon Off gel product was great for getting the inside of the fire box cleaned. Sure beats using the angle grinder! I only used the angle grinder to clean up the flavor bars and the little warming tray grates.

Put your die grinder away
There is a product called Carbon Off. First pic is just a quick wipe with a paper towel Directions say rinse with water. Out came the garden hose. Second pic Inside of end cap off of a red head. Need to test a fire box next. This stuff is not good for paint. Will have to...
