Vortex Question

Yes. Otherwise drippings land on the kettle surface, attracting ash and simply adding to the mess.

I don’t do anything, and based on all these replies, I’m confused with what I’ve clearly been doing wrong. You cover the charcoal grate with foil...? How does the air flow? Pictures, anyone?

In today's cook of Chicken Wings There were gaps on the side of the Weber Kettle where the Aluminum Foil is placed in which the air can flow and also air can flow through the bottom of the ignited Vortex. I placed a round Flat Ring of Aluminum Foil around the Vortex which is on the Charcoal Grate.

Three pieces work pretty well, they catch a lot of grease. Makes cleanup that much easier. Not that I’m a “polish every use” kind of guy.
