Older son heading back to Texas for junior year, so we did a Thursday night bbq for going away. He wanted tri-tip.

Prepped with Montreal Steak Seasoning:

Searing on the coals at the end:

Slicing; amazing how much went straight from cutting board to mouths:

We all had a good time. Thanks for looking.

Steve, no water in the pan and vents wide open, so I think the smoker got up to 300-325 on the lid thermometer. Targeted 130 meat temp before searing and I think I got there about 60 minutes. Unfortunately, I checked with the Thermapen at 45 minutes, 55 minutes and 65 minutes, so I overshot a little. Meat was medium to medium well. Still moist, tender and tasty, but I wish I had caught it a little sooner....

Dale....I've tried probably 1/2 dozen or so rubs on the tri tips and montreal is by far everyone's favorite at my house. I tend to be like "hey, real bbq means I should make my own rub", but...shouldn't let pride stand in the way of good eats I suppose. And montreal is relatively similar to the simple rub they generally use in Santa Maria anyhow.

I've also tried smoking v grilling (reverse sear) and the latter is more to my liking.

Thanks for the pics, is your son a Longhorn?

Thanks!

Tim, I hear ya on the MSS. Works great with tri-tip. No, my son's a Buffalo. Little school in the panhandle, West Texas A&M.

We Do love our tri tip in CA don't we? I do it year round at our house and it's a main part of the buffet on Superbowl Sunday....and many other Sunday's during football season.

Yours looked great and I have some ready to do this weekend or next. I have some bourbon soaked oak wood that I will be using for the first time.

Man, that looks good!

Only tried tri once and, like the idiot that I am, I overcooked it. Seeing these pics, im giving serious thought to giving it another shot this weekend.

BTW - had a **** of a time finding tri tip here in Raleigh, NC but finally came across some at Trade Joe's.

I tried tri-tip for the first time a while back and it was excellent.

I may be in beef country, but that cut is not available in the stores here. Had to make a special order with my local butcher.

I'm just wondering if Tri Tip is the same cut or similar cut as "Bolar" Roasts
We don't have tri-tips in Australia but i think i read somewhere that it's the same as Bolar.
Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Cheers

Davo
