Today at Costco

Just got a pork belly at Costco near me this afternoon. Will start it tomorrow morning. This Costco still has Prime tomahawk ribeyes and other very thick and large prime steaks. All in a separate cooler so not sure if this is permanent or a roadshow.

I've been surprised that pork bellies have stayed available here and at other Costco stores.
I'm still on the lookout for tomahawk steaks, Costco or otherwise.

Dang Bob, I gotta move to St. Louis. Much better prices than here in central Wisconsin.:(

Today, 9/5/2017 at a StL Costco.
Prime briskets $3.49/lb, pork belly $3.69 (I think) and regular gasoline $2.39.

Meat prices have shot up here in AZ. beef about a third higher than July and chicken has almost doubled, pork up a little.
Our Costco has a whole endcap chiller full of pork bellies usually about 20 - 25 to chose from all the time.

Hang in there Dwain. Ours didn't either until this year.
I've mentioned it in other threads, but it's worth repeating. If your Costco doesn't carry something you want, tell them about it. Just recently I complained online about the limited and unchanging selection of salad dressings at my Costco. Within three weeks they doubled the selections and again started carrying one of the brands I mentioned. This was clearly not just a coincidence. Go online and tell them what you want to see in the store.

big difference between prime and choice briskets from Costco.

and I ain't talking price either.

Yesterday, 10/24/17, at my local south St Louis county Costco.
Regular gasoline $2.01
Whole pork belly $2.99/lb, didn't buy one. thick sliced was $3.99/lb.
Three pack of pork loin back ribs $2.99/lb, bought one pack.
Prime whole brisket packer $2.59/lb, bought one.
Whole chicken thighs $0.99/lb, bought a 10 lb. pack.

Pretty good drop in price for the briskets and bellies from a month ago.

I will check next time. Other times I looked, they either had none or I thought the price was to much for my blood. That being said, I have never had issues with the ones I bought at sf.

Sam's Club is now selling Kobe rib eye steak for $34.99 per pound.

I've heard the stuff sells for $400.00 per pound in the open market.

Both of our freezers are stuffed, so now everything will be on sale of course. I have never seen prime brisket at our Costco, not to say they never have it because we only go there about once a month. Would really like to try one.
What I have seen at the local markets here is a BIG jump in beef prices and pork. Chicken is up but when on sale still under a buck a pound.
I've been getting cross rib roasts which I have ground for hamburger at $2.99 a pound now the cheapest I've found is $4.99 a pound on sale.

Be sure you're looking at the prime packers. For reasons I'll never understand, the choice brisket flat sells for about triple the price of whole prime packers. I think you could cut off the point and throw it away and the prime would still be cheaper by the pound.

I'll double-check and see, but I don't recall seeing the words: Kobe style.

The meat had some nice marbling for sure.
I believe in Japan the "Kobe" label on beef means something very specific. In the U.S., not so much. It doesn't mean you'll legally see junk beef labeled "Kobe", but what can be legally called "Kobe" is a much larger category than in Japan. The stuff you buy in Sam's Club is almost certainly not from Hyogo nor fed beer and massaged daily.

I saw a video where they were cooking up some real Kobe steak. "Marbling" didn't begin to describe it. I would venture it was close to 50% fat. I'm not talking around the edges. I mean marbled in the meat. And that was a piece of top round.

The price is also a dead giveaway. No way you're going to buy real Kobe rib-eye steak for $35/lb. Maybe American raised Wagyu cattle. A few years ago Costco sold Wagyu boneless ribeye roast at $109.99/lb., $1200 for the whole roast. I won't be cooking one of those for Christmas.
