This spells trouble for me

At the end of my street, well within walking distance of my house, is a small shopping center that has a liquor store, beer distributor, an awesome cheesesteak place, an ok Chinese takeout place, an excellent Thai place... Today, I drove by and saw this:

Phamous Phil's is a killer bbq place... best in the area in my opinion... and he's moving to the end of my street!

I may ask for an internship.

This certainly won't be good for my waistline or wallet.

You're lucky - we don't have any decent BBQ joints here. The closest is Dickey's BBQ Pit, and all that is: food cooked who knows where, frozen for who knows how long and reheated in a microwave and served to you at 200% cost...Everyone says "Hey Chuck, lets check out dickey's." I reply "sooner go to mcdonalds"

Maybe it's a different chain, but the Dickey's near us isn't too bad. Not as good as home-cooked, but better than most of the other local joints.

Justin, whereabouts in PA is this? According to their website (http://www.phamousphilsbbq.com/ordereze/Default.aspx), they're not far from me (I'm in eastern Montco.), so a road trip may be in my future. :p

Where I live, we are thought to have some of the best bbq in the country! Heck, we even have a huge festival celebrating our q-ing heritage. You could put (most) local bbq joints on both sides, in front, behind, or even on top of my house, and I still won't order Q from them. Since I got my WSM, I just like mine more. Not saying the local joints aren't good, just not the way I like mine.

I'm very much the same way. If we're on vacation or traveling, I'll gladly give just about any BBQ joint a try, but when we're home, I'd much rather make it myself. It's not really a question of quality, but of personal tastes. Ribs are a perfect example. Just about every place near me serves their ribs dripping with or swimming in sauce. Texture-wise, they may be perfect, but I just prefer ribs either dry or very lightly sauced (more like a glaze), so that's how I cook them. Aside from one instance where I mixed up "tablespoon" with "teaspoon" when measuring the cayenne for the rub (those were some HOT ribs!), nobody who's eaten my ribs has complained. I just make sure to serve some warmed sauce on the side in case people want to add it.

Also, I'm a cheap bastid. Why would I pay $24 for a rack of ribs from a restaurant when I can buy two or three for that cost and cook them exactly how I like them? Even a PP sammy is almost $8 at the closest BQ joint; for $12 (OK, $15 when you factor in the other ingredients) I can make enough pulled pork for a couple dozen sammiches. Even factoring in the cost of bread/buns/rolls, it's costing me less than a buck a piece to make them myself. (This is exactly the argument I use to justify the amount of time I spend with the WSM to SWMBO.)

I have eaten at Dickey's here in my area several times, always for convenience, never for pleasure. I have never tasted nor smelled anything somewhat resembling smoke. I don't believe they cook the meat there and if they do its probably on an electric cooker.

The Dickey's by my place took over an Italian resturant. Their sign went up first about two months before they started operations. I was excited that we were getting a BBQ place and then I saw something that told me....Game over.

They removed all the stove and ovens...I knew then it was a re-heat joint and I wanted no part of that. Friends who have gone have said "shoulda listened to you." Then people ask "why don't you open a BBQ joint?" And I say "in kalifornia!!! where the business tax rate is 105%"

It's 20 miles from my my house to Lexington, and I pretty much agree with you - I like mine better. But I do occasionally stop at The BBQ Center for a sandwich when I 'm passing through just because it's quick.

Their current location is on Germantown Pike. It's between Collegeville and Eagleville. I'm in the Royersford/Limerick area... near the intersection of Township Line Road and Ridge Pike.
