With 23 locations in the Greater Nashville area, Whitt's Barbecue is a local chain that's been pumping out the smoked meats since 1966. Family members also operate three locations in Alabama.

My sister, The Official TVWBB Greater Nashville Area BBQ Restaurant Correspondent, visited Whitt's on the recommendation of her dentist who is a big fan. "Not a fancy place," she writes. "It's a drive-thru and walk-up place, no sit-down. We got 1/2 slabs of ribs, coleslaw, beans, mac & cheese, and cornbread slices." Pickle slices and barbecue sauce were served on the side. Food was served in Styrofoam clamshell containers.

"Ribs were good, but due to a shortage they are only available one day a week. The other five days of the week (closed on Sundays) they offer pulled pork and chicken. Sides were nothing special. Overall, I would give Whitt's a thumbs down."

It has always been my practice to give an eatery at least 3 try’s before I give a place a thumbs up or down. And I put a bit of time between visits, usually a couple, three months. Never know if you hit the place at a bad time, maybe new and inexperienced help, or what ever. This especially applies now during these trying times. Of coarse if the place is really bad, dirty, or especially rude my rule goes straight out the window.

I agree with you.

The problem with chains is quality varies with each location.
Indeed, this is a huge problem with franchise food service. The big names rigidly control the named outlets so that the customer will get the same experience regardless of location.

There's actually at least 2 (and at least a 3rd starting up,) barbecue chains in this area, and there's one that I'll hit semi-regularly to short cut dinner. A new outlet had started nearby probably 10 years ago, lasted less than 2 years and folded. I heard off the record what was happening, and it was a franchisor's nightmare, things like menu items not available, and not the same as other outlets. There's a bigger name chain that's generally not as convenient for us, and there's a couple of outlets that we just will not return to.

Wow, you're a saint. I don't have that kind of patience!

Yes indeed, I am a much more intolerant person when it comes to dining out, I will sometimes give a place a second shot just Incase I made a bad order choice which has happened but, it’s not baseball when it comes to the quality of what I’m paying for. No, three strike rule in my ball game!
