Tell me about espresso

There are two types. The original takes pods from a number of makers. The newer type may not have the same diversity.
Can they take those DIY type refillable pods that are available for Keurig machines? You know, you grind your own, fill the pods and brew then empty and wash to do it over.

I just Googled it to answer my own question. Indeed there are stainless and plastic refillable filter pods, tampers, etc... But I imagine if you go that route, you need a decent grinder capable of consistent espresso grind and than your approaching the detail and effort of a regular espresso machine.

K cup is a different size. There are refillable PODs for the original style nespresso.

That said, I think part of the "luxury" of a nespresso is not having to futz with it and within a couple of minutes you are holding a cup of espresso or cappuccino that is too hot to drink but otherwise "ready"

The capsule costs vary in price, flavor, quality etc.

The one I bought was a gift and I've only had a couple of the original sample pods that came with it, yet they were excellent.

That's what I found after a Google search too. Pages of pods that seem to fit a specific variant of the machine. Interesting.
I had an interest in this when it first came out as I enjoyed Tchibo coffee while I was in Germany quite frequentlyfor work a few years ago:

I get the sense that they are a bit high maintenance though...also, I wonder about the quality.

Never "slammed" them. I'm curious about their function.
kinda hard to see the positive in this post:

Aren't Nespresso machines essentially just Keurigs for espresso and just cutting corners vs real espresso machines including super automatics?

Basically full negative. Real which implies fake.

Nespresso espresso machines have been around a long time.

Here’s some reading which might answer your questions. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nespresso

I know the 49ers getting curb stomped by the Birds has you a little testy, but I was simply inquiring. You're welcome to read into it anything you wish though;)

Have you tried the "Refillable - Reusable Coffee Pods?" I have the Nespresso Pixie & I really get tired of having to order these pods from them.

That's precisely what I'd be concerned about. Although, they seem like a very good alternative to the more conventional espresso machines which I've owned in the past and they were difficult to use and clean.

And when you venture into the world of super automatics...$1000,$2500...we don't like espresso that much.

Hey EricV. I'm confused with your comment: "these pods from them"

OriginalLine pods are made by several companies and widely available at many stores and online.

My friend likes a light roast, so I bought a pack of starbucks blonde roast. I prefer a darker more intense roast so I ordered a sampler of Peets, but I've not had a chance to try them out.

Cost per shot varies. The Peets sampler is 68 cents each. Starbucks was 72 cents. I'm sure other brands are more, and less.

I suppose someone ( NOT ME ) could work up a full financial analysis on espresso makers.

I prefer to justify the cost comparing cost of each pod to cost of going to a coffee shop.

A cappuccino at starbucks is about $5

The nespresso pixie was $170 and at 75 cents a pod, the first shot is pretty expensive. The break even point is 40 shots (ignoring the cost of a couple ounces of milk)

The convenience of the nespresso is what makes it a winner.

Lavazza can be $0.28 per pod on Amazon. Many others are around $0.35-$0.40.

The Peet's are great. Costco places them on sale a few times a year and I stock up on them then.

I really like Illy, from Amazon. A 100 pack can be had for $0.598 per capsule and/or $0.622 in an 80-pack config. This is about the most I'll spend. Illy makes a great espresso shot; specifically the Extra Bold:

$0.55 today - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NPBZHSF/?tag=tvwb-20

$0.84 today which is high for this one - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08L8CBFQR/?tag=tvwb-20

$0.37 today - wife likes these (decaf) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071NJXGNY/?tag=tvwb-20

$0.28 today - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075LVGHP6/?tag=tvwb-20

$0.41 today - these are a good and decent shot, i buy them when they're less expensive though - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NF7656D/?tag=tvwb-20

$0.444 today - these are good but i prefer Illy or Lavazza over these - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0788GFPDN/?tag=tvwb-20

Then there's always Nespresso branded pods and some people like the SBUX pods too.

My gotos are basically, Illy, Lavazza, Peet's and the Cafe La Llave.

That makes sense to me. I guess the real question is how is the espresso vs what you'd get from any coffee shop?

I need to revise this.

Better than Starbucks.
better than one made in my moka pot.

As good as some I've had served in a cup at a specialty coffee shop.

Prob not best ever, but as good as any I've had recently.

In the past I have just ordered the original pods from Nespresso. My question is geared around these refillable/reuseable pods. see link reference:

looking at that product's reviews, it looks kinda bad.
There are other types when you scroll down on that link, however I had refillable pod for my Keurig coffee maker years ago & I didn't care for it, the same principal probably applies here as well. applies

When I was researching nespresso machines, I spent about 30 mins looking at different re-usable pods and decided that could be a future thing, but ran into a bunch of good and bad reviews and it didn't seem worth the effort.

Since this was a gift, I knew "easy button" was a must have. They had an espresso maker but it was a pain to use, a pain to clean and getting coffee with the precise grind to make good espresso or cappuccino needed to be done at a coffee shop as it was a very fine grind.
