Smoke vs 732

Started Monday morning at 4:00 am bought a 16 lb Prime Brisket at Costco on Sunday. Rubbed with a layer of Beef Base then S n P and topped off with Tatonka Seasoning from Owens BBQ.

Started up the Summit Grill at 0445 and got the gear out.

Right away there was a temp difference the Smoke was always 10-15 deg. Hotter then the 732 on Pit temp. The probes were set up side by side in the pit. The meat temps were consistently 5-10 deg. Hotter on the 732. The Meat Probes were also in the same area in the brisket.

Around 3:00 pm I went for a walk with my receivers. The House with the two big trees is mine to give a little perspective on the distance when they stopped working. The 732 conked out in the middle of the softball field which is about 75 ft. from the Q. Where I took the pic was about 325 ft. that’s where the Smoke stopped transmitting. Not Bad.

This is around the 10th hour. It still wasn’t giving up.

After 12.5 hours the brisket finally gave up. The Summit Grill ran great stayed very consistent in the 250-275 range. I win.

So what did I get out of this? The 732 is a very good unit and for $50 you can’t go wrong. For another $50 you can get the Smoke. I think the Smoke temps were more accurate then the 732 especially the meat probe. I used my Thermopen (Orange, the fastest of them all)a lot during the cook and it was always a degree or two of the Smoke temp. The Smoke unit has a nice stand on the back but I really liked the magnets. If you have any questions feel free. I’m doing this at 0100 with about 3 hours total sleep for the day. BTW the Brisket was for a Halloween Party and it turned out awesome even though timing wise I cut it pretty close. Here are a couple more pics. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the review Bob, very helpful. I don't have a thermopen, but I do have two thermopops. The thermopops on the meat always show cooler by about 5 deg than the 732.
