Smoke From BBQ Must Stay On Your Property

Can't blame the guy for responding/doing his job. Blame the dumb asses for putting that bylaw in place. Or interpreting it in this manner.

I would think it was intended for noxious fumes from slaughter houses, road tar manufacturers, etc.

Gonna have to fight it in whatever court handles bylaw infractions.

We live in a HOA, but the board here has a live and let live attitude. If I didn't pay a yearly HOA fee I wouldn't know we even had one. I try to be very careful when we cook outside because of our close proximity to our neighbors. My smokers are always used in the middle of the yard so the smoke will disperse before drifting over the walls of our yard.
The worst part is the KBB white smoke, which is heavy and stinks. One advantage we have is we are in a valley and there is almost always a pretty good breeze which helps.
The other thing is most of our neighbors are retired and really don't spend a lot of time outside. So after two years, no problems.

Sad what some whack job with nothing better to do than complain about bbq can stoop to to.

Some of my neighbors say they like to smell my smoker when it's going.

The rest of them come over and demand food.

Growing up in row homes, no HOA, no one would put up with that crap. You only put a big target on your house come moving night, the night before Halloween or any other weekend or night when us kids got bored. ;) Go ahead, call the police, it'll only get worse. ;) We had postage stamp size yards, everyone grilled, BBQ and some smoked. I bought a brinkman right after graduating and got hooked then. The neighbors loved it. My first cook was chicken, the recipe I got was from an ole black gentleman. I never got a piece of it, everyone said it was good and wanted more. Our last residence was the same, row homes and I still smoked, close your windows if you don't like it :)- But while I'm temporarily trapped in this matchbox apartment, August 14th we sign on the dotted line for a rancher, 3/4's of an acre, aka country. Like Jim and Dwain said 300+ feet make all neighbors great!

Nah, he's an idiot. HE is the one misinterpreting the ordinance. He says he's county, so it's not an HOA or bylaw, it's an ordinance. That ordinance was written to address noxious odors, not barbeque smoke. The first mistake was responding. The person on the phone should've simply said that the people weren't doing anything wrong. Then when the idiot does respond he misinterprets the rule. Anyone who reads that and thinks that smoke of any kind can be contained on a single property should find a new line of work.

As someone who spent 17 years enforcing ordinances, I can tell you my response to the caller would've been that they do not have a legitimate complaint and no one would be sent to investigate.

the only thing that bothers me when I smell my neighbors smoke is that it is not coming from my backyard

I'm way out in the country, on 10 acres. I can only see my closest neighbor's house in the winter. Once the leaves come out, the house is completely hidden. They're close to Jim's 300 yards, but not quite. The other 3 sides are on the order of 1/2 mile or better. The closest folks burn their trash rather than pay for pick up service. Sadly, it's legal here, but with that mess, I certainly wouldn't entertain any comment from them about my cooking fires!

;) yeah I'm on a 5,700 acre ranch (not ranch kettle) my nearest neighbor is about a mile away and when they see smoke it ain't my smoker...we got us a wildfire. Hard to believe people have to live that way. My Pops lives in town where they have HOAs and I don't get it. A fine for planting the wrong type tree in your front yard or the trash can has been at the curb too long sheesh what's next BBQ smoke leaving the property...oh...looks like we are there.

You're gonna live in a rancher?
How cool!

Seriously, congrats on your new digs!
Post some pics when you get moved in, please.

HA! You know I toyed with the rancher kettle for a hot second? Did my research and my first was the 27", my baby, the first :) Thanks Bob, and I will post some pics here!
