Should you say anything?

and that includes me. I don't know how to be really polite about this and not hurt anyone's feelings, but I feel like I should mention it.

When someone posts about something (for example, food) and they say how they REALLY like it, do you think it is nice for someone to post something negative about it or say they don't like it?

Opinions are what are expressed on pretty much any forum. Those are always subjective, I love beets, my wife’s son loves beets, many people think that they are something which should never enter the food spectrum. All I can say to that type of thought is, they are simply wrong. And that MY opinion! It’s not a big deal if someone disagrees with me, they may or may not be invited back for an equally lovely feast, it’s their loss.
I’m sure feelings were made to be “bruised“ from time to time. It‘s human nature to express opinion. I wear that with pride!
I love the book you just posted, I don’t have a pool though!😉

Joan, maybe those posters don't intend to hurt the original posters feelings, but just did not think
they would be offended?

That is two different questions rolled into one. I will tackle the second one first. No one really cares if you like it or not because we are not you. Most people have better stuff to do than post comments about "I hate xyz". I suppose if you really feel like sharing with the world that you don't like something, you have my blessing. No harm done.

The first part of your question is trickier. If nobody ever posted a negative comment, we would have nothing but a lovefest. Negative comments need to be part of a forum, and you kind of need a thick skin for the occasional one. I think the key is phrasing anything negative in the most helpful and constructive way possible.

Sometimes people just take something wrong, because it's difficult to get a "feeling" across in writing rather than spoken language. Though I have at times seen (what I believe to be intentional) flames/daggers thrown.

"My favorite sauce is Head Country hot. Man that stuff is good. I've been hearing great things about the Blues Hog, that should be my next buy.

What is your favorite BBQ sauce?"

OK, this person is asking for everyone's favorite, not their opinion about what the poster said they like. Just because they don't like the Blue Hog does not mean the poster wont either. IMHO, that person should start their own thread about why not to try Blue Hog.;)

I guess what I am trying to say is something I'm sure all our mothers taught us.

"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"

(unless someone ASK you what you think.) lol

I thought every one handled it quite well without getting snarky.

As long as you don't belittle them for their opinion, it's perfectly fine and to be expected. Opinions are opinions and anyone reading forums needs to understand that.

Example of what I am trying to say.

I post I like shrimp, I really enjoy eating shrimp. It makes me happy and it taste soo good. A bunch of other people also post how much they enjoy shrimp and why. Someone else comes along and says, I hate shrimp, it stinks, just looking at it makes me want to throw up. WHY ruin a good time here for other people?

I hate all seafood. If it comes from the ocean I don’t eat it.
I had a baby sitter fry some sardines and force feed them to me and my brother. I was 6. 42 years later 🤮.
Good news my kids love sushi, and all seafood, I support it 💯.
I also like you Joan for your persistence and love of recipes!

Yes we are grown ups and can take criticism. I have to admit if I do not like a cook shown I usually stay out of comments. But if the cook has a interesting twist to it I will state my dislikes ,and learn the differences.
As I like some of the ways sprouts are cooked but I an always looking to fine new and different ways. Not that they are bad just no flavor to me.

My wife is S Korean and being surrounded by water, if it swims,or comes out of the grown she is all over it. But she will try,and eat anything I am so jealous at times.
Born in the upper central plains sea food was not on out menus but I learned to love it .

My posts have nothing to do with criticism. I am talking about being polite and good manners, (yes I know, a thing of the past)

Like Kevin said, " I have to admit if I do not like a cook shown I usually stay out of comments. ".

You’ve shot me down for this once, Joan. I’m ok with that.
IMHO, it’s all about context, but due to the limits of any on-line forum in conveying expression, if someone‘s comments come across as less than polite, I try to take what I can from it that is constructive and drop the rest. I think almost everyone comes here to enjoy the stories, pictures, recipes, and camaraderie. Part of that is accepting that we all won’t agree 100%, and I still want to hear others take on things even so. I don’t sense that most people wake up in the morning and say to themself ‘I can’t wait to get on the forum and demolish someone‘.
