Sea Salt refill for grinder

My wife and I have been using Morton's Extra Course Sea Salt refill, the 14oz size.

But its no longer carried at the three grocery stores in our area. I searched Amazon, and can't find them priced the way I want to purchase. They're either way too expensive for a 2 pak, $12 , or I can get a 6 pak for $15, and it would take us years to go through 6 of these.

I found it at Target on-line , at the right price, about $3, but shipping drove the price way high.

I've looked over the shelf at the store, and I see other brands of extra course sea salt, but I'm not sure of what I'm buying, and that it will work in our salt mill.

Any suggestions for a replacement?
 
I guess you'd have to take a little bit of your current salt to the store to compare grain size. If you find something of similar size and at a price you like, I'd buy it because there's no difference between salts selling in the $3-4 price range.
 
I got this salt & grinder in 2014/2015 - It's just about time for me to reorder the salt. The grinder has held up well, and the salt's been fine but I'm no connoisseur. The packaging has changed on the salt.

I just talked to my cousin about this stuff a week or two ago, he just gets his @ costco in bigger grinders like you posted.
 
The problem at the store, is the containers are not transparent so I can see the size of the salt. I've seen some reviews at Amazon, where people have complained that the salt was too fine for their mills or grinder, even though labeled as " extra course " . Its a crapshoot without being able to open up the container and see what I get.

Clint, that's a good idea to look at the salt sold with the grinders. And I think like Chris says, salt is pretty much ..... salt.

Never thought finding a refill would be a problem. Morton's web site says they still make the 14 oz refill bottles, but I sure can't find'em.

Obviously.

But if you buy it too fine, it won't work in your grinder. As I said in my post, one company's extra course , may not be the same as another's......................

If it was just a matter of picking up extra course salt, I would not have made the post. I've also seen reviews at Amazon, of the salt being extra course, but being too hard for their grinders.

And ya can't tell diddly squat on the shelf at the grocery store, it does not appear to me that the labeling is consistent if your trying to buy a refill for your salt mill. Notice the Morton refill is labeled as such.

I will post on how well it works. I never dreamed that all salt is not created equal, but the more internet searching I've done, I've found they're all not the same for grinder use. Really, IDK what the grinder accomplishes with salt, grinding salt is not the same as getting fresh ground pepper. And I don't use the grinder for rub recipes that call for Kosher salt. But I've got one , so ........

Except most are buying it at Whole Foods.

And at that price, I'd just buy a couple of the Morton's .
 
That's the one at the link in my last post. Its popular.

I'm still using the last of our Morton's , so I haven't tried the Himalayan salt yet. At the grocery store Sunday, I went to look at the salt shelves again, and its still confusing. But they did have the salt I bought, except it was sold by the pound for $5.39 . I paid $8.49 for 2.2 #'s at Amazon.

Meathead Goldwyn has a good salt article, explains diff between table salt, kosher salt, and sea salt. And from this , I can see why many have problems finding salt for their grinders. It not only has to be kosher or sea salt, but has to be the right size.
