question on late '90s Summit 450 LP restoration: what's the orange sealant on the lower aluminum sides for?

My first thought was to simply weld a piece of metal on the backside of the piece with the big hole...at least that should keep the heat in and keep the critters out.

Based on your advice, I won't paint any of the inside surfaces. I'll just paint the outside aluminum pieces for looks.
Thank you for that!
I made 18 ga panels to exactly fit over the original pieces and bolted them on for my Summit Platinum D6. Working great.

Bill, that is great. What kind of steel did you use? Is it stainless? It sure looks like your grill would be totally unusable now without your repairs.

Yes, stainless. 18ga is the heaviest ga. That the brake I used can handle. Thinking about fabricating flavorizer bars next.

That is certainly a interesting combo. I went to a propane dealer that was also a Broilmaster dealer once.
Until a few years ago, they also sold Weber, as Broil King was the Weber distributor in Canada. I have a barbecue themed TV show on a cable network, I approached Weber for sponsorship, they would only sponsor if they were the sole grill sponsor, I couldn’t agree to that so I approached Broil King and they gave me everything I asked for. The relationship is ongoing.

Are there links to the show?

They are on EastlinkTV, a Canadian only network. There are a few episodes that got uploaded to YouTube. We produced 24 episodes, none since Covid. Some Weber grills were used, but not mentioned or given props in the credits. I’m ready to go with a new season when we get the go ahead. There are a few clips on our fb page. www.facebook.com/bbqbattle

Link seems to be private and does not work.

Some pics on my progress. My neighbor's sandblaster did wonders on one the aluminum side panels. (And I kinda like the gray, too - I may keep it like that, we'll see.) The bottom aluminum piece looks a zillion times better after all of my scrubbing and scraping - I don't care if it looks a bit 'weathered,' though.

A question on the flavor bars: mine are really solid, with no flaking, no holes, no broken edges, etc. I hand-sanded one just to see how much rust came off, and it's looking great. Any reason I wouldn't want to keep these? I figure I'll do some more sanding and all the rust on the top side will be gone, and they'll look shiny again (but will eventually rust, I suppose).

Thanks for following. This is a fun project.

Thanks for the inspiration, Bill. I figured my neighbor was going have trouble grinding out the rust and welding the porcelain-enameled steel, so I followed your lead and made my own 18ga steel panels, attached with stainless bolts and nuts and called it a day. Thank you!PXL_20220115_200032918.jpgPXL_20220115_200054858.jpgPXL_20220115_200533271.jpgPXL_20220115_212122815.jpg

Looks like the fix I want to do. The trickier part is making plates like that for the front that include matching cut-outs for the burners and igniters. I wish I had the ability to work with metal, but for me this means finding a sheet metal shop that will do it at a feasible price.
