Pulled pork for kids too! (final pics)

Dear BBQ aficionados,

I'm currently on parental leave as we had our third child just two weeks a go . Now, here at Finland that's vacation without pay -which means that we are short on money:(. Obviously this means that we need to save on everything. And surprice we spend load of money on food.

Anyway, I found 6 pounds of boneless pork shoulder from our freezer (not the same as Boston butt, we here at Finland butcher our pork differently, but its close.)
I want to prepare it so that our 3 and 6 years old girls would eat it as well. And for this I need Your guidance.

I was thinking of rub made of; onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, white pepper, black pepper and some brown muscavado sugar. Then smoking it normally with our WSM with apple and hickory. Pulling it afterwards and putting the pulled meat to some sort of tomato sauce, which kids would enjoy with pasta or with boiled potatotes etc. I and my wife could eat it with salad (low carb diet.)

How does this sounds and any advice?

Many thanks!

With kind regards,
Antti

P.S
Sorry for any bad language, English is not my native.....

I have 5 yr old girl and 6 yr old boy and they like to eat it with no sauce on it. Try that and if it doesn't work maybe bbq sauce on top. Good luck

My 5 and 7 ur olds eat it as fast as I can pull it with a simple rub ( such as u describe) and no sauce.. Use frozen leftovers all the time for pulled pork nachos with BA sauce and pulled pork tacos or pp burritos (stuffed with black beans corn cheese)

Congrats on the baby

Thanks for advice both of you! And thanks for Kurt of the congrats!

I think you are right... as our kids are allways... kind of "not_into_sauces_that_much"... they are like "whats in this dad?" and so on - I guess you know what I mean.

But still, more advices are welcome! How to serve this stuff for the kids and with what etc.?

My advice is keep it as simple as possoble. My wife isn't a big fan of anything smoked and very bold rubs, so I find myself using mild/sweet fruit woods and less of it. Pasta dishes, over mashed potatoes with gravy on the side, grilled cheese sandwiches etc. I find that when I get my 7 yr old involved in the prep, he's way more excited to eat the food he's helped preparing.

Oh and CONGRATULATIONS on the new addition to your family!!!

Antti P;
My grandson is a VERY finicky eater. However, on a visit, I showed my Son-in-law how to do a Boston Butt (for pulled pork) on his Weber Performer. I had the grandson (age five) "help" us with the preparation. He had been playing "cowboy" that day, so I told him we were making "Cowboy pulled pork sandwiches". I used a standard pork rub and a simple BBQ sauce. His father stated that he had NEVER seen him eat with such enthusiasm. The granddaughter (age 8) also ate with "gusto"...

Congrats on the baby!! My grandkids eat pulled pork by dipping it in ketchup. LOL They also like pulled pork nachos and tacos. Good luck getting them to eat. I like the idea about getting them involved.

Many thanks to you all!

I will follow few basic rules found now from this thread:

- Mild rub
- No sauce, keep it simple (maybe ketchup
- Get kids involved

I'm sure this will be success!

Try condensed tomato soup out of the can instead of catsup. I used that for my sons when they were younger and they loved it.

Congrats Antti! Looking forward to the pictures.

Here we go:

Meat has been in the machine for 4½hours and its bit falling apart . That's because when I started the meat was still quite frozen and I did not recognice its "shape" and need for rope around it. I made emergency manouvers in the WSM to keep it together.

After 8 hours in the WSM:

I did put it in to a oven to low heat for allmost another 8 hours.

During the early stages the meat was bit falling apart and about fist size piece was separated. I foilled it up to be smokers midnight snack;). I enjoyd it in between some toast complimented with some Hellman's mayo only. It was like kissing baby Jesus cheek! Here's picture of the midnight folio pouch:
