Old fart here that finally broke down and bought a 18.5 WSM.
My reason for buying this brand is because I've had a Weber grill that's been bullet proof for a lot of years.
Like the Weber quality. (y)
What I need now is a thermometer that I can stick into the meat without lifting the lid. Something that could utilize that port thingie.
Thing is:
I don't want any blue tooth. Don't want any batteries.
Just want something that sticks in the meat through that port and shows the temp.
Is that possible ?
Or do I have to go with a battery operated Thermometer?
Any and all help in keeping me low tech is most greatly appreciated.

Antonio Whatever you do do not cut into your pit Spend a few extra dollars and buy a hinge for your leader it’ll save a lot of time and effort when you’re doing your cook just opening and closing it’ll save your back also from lifting if you’re an old man like me

Say, what do you guys do with the top when your checking meat?

I use a Sheppard's Hook set in the ground at the edge of my patio. It keep the lid off of the ground and out of the way.

I put mine on cardboard. I smoke in the corner of my garage.
 
AS -- my lid gets hung from a hook on my $50 Harbor Freight cart.

But it can also get put down on the oil change pans.

man I can't believe I never thought of a a shepherd's hook! I keep a scrap piece of plywood for spray painting in the yard or to slid under the truck when changing oil - that thing is now obsolete for setting the smoker lid atop.

This gave my small pea brain a small great (for me) idea.
I have to return that water heater pan to Lowes tomorrow. While there I can pick up an aluminum rod to cut and shape into hooks.
I can hang a couple on the deck railing to hold the top and side of the cooker.

As the cooker is brand new, the idea of cutting into it makes me cringe.
Though grinding a slot into the lid, for the thermometer lead talks to me.
it’ll save your back also from lifting if you’re an old man like me
