Newbie with an old Genesis--learning to refurb!

The knob thing is another example of what bothers me about Weber. They had perfectly good knobs that looks alright and cleaned up easily enough. Now, in an effort to make the produce sexier, they have spent more money and actually made a knob that isn't as functional.
You mean the knobs can't be cleaned up as easily?
May be true of mine, maybe not. The Juglans nigra (black walnut) is like the dark side. You either embrace it, or you fight it. I cannot fight it. I can't grow most plants underneath it. I knew this when we bought this place, but really, I bought some trees, and there happened to be a house on the property. I love Black Walnut. So I have determined to live with what it does. But it is destructive. It just is.

The stain is a thing.

Normal stains might come out of these knobs.

I love the feel of the knobs. ( I remember thinking "wow, these feel really luxurious.") But now that I'm cleaning up the grill, I realize the stain is going to cost me $40. I guess over 10 years, that's not much. $4 per year. More for the grates and the other innards. So....all total so far...$24 per year or so, to maintain the grill. I dunno.

Regarding sharpening a spatula -

I like to keep an edge on mine to separate frozen burgers, open packages, cut chicken breasts, scrape grates, and flip stuff.

I have Arkansas bench stones that I use to sharpen knives, but that would take much too long for what I do to my spatula. I have a big, cheap, course (also noticeably banana shaped) synthetic stone that I use. I just do a couple of passes, grinding about a forty-five degree angle off the top side of the front. It's not rocket science and takes thirty extra seconds every time I sharpen kitchen knives.

I have what my daddy called a "whet rock". It's actually his. He sharpened my knives until he died. Nobody has sharpened them since, really, but I have his sharpening stone. (No, it's not the fancy sharpening systems with a wet stone. I bought that system for my husband to sharpen the knives for planes, and he never used it, so....anyway)...

I wonder if a few passes of the "whet rock" over the edge of my stainless spatula would do it some good!?!?

I doubt it. I would instead try a file as if sharpening an ax or lawnmower blade. Anything that successfully sharpens knives is likely way too smooth to grind a whole new profile on a stainless steel spatula.

Okey dokey. Yeah I use A grinder to sharpen the mower blades.

ETA: ALTHOUGH....my spatula does have the profile. It is just not uber-sharp. Hmmm....

Dan I'm reading back through the thread. Repetition is necessary for my poor brain to pick up on things these days.

I see that you chose the E330. So I googled "Weber E330." And I got several different grills.

You obviously know more history than I likely will ever absorb, so which ones are you considering "classic styling" and/or any other reasons for thinking those are best grills.

In case you are wondering, yes, I'm trying to imprint on my mind, which grills might be really good gets for me to grab for a good price and rehab for many of the reasons y'all have stated in this thread--a second grill---a grill down by the fire pit cuz....a grill down by the firepit, yaknow?

Same basic grill as your E310 with an extra sear burner, and a side burner on the right shelf.

Grates and cookbox are the same as your 310.

In this pic it's setup for baking,.

I've modified my E330, and moved the tank outside, and added a spare tank holder on the left.

Will you do a brief explanation of "set up for baking" for me? I didn't even know you could do this.

I also like your extra tank setup. And I like your tank covers a lot! I am fortunate to have the little tank "weigh" thingy inside my cabinet, so I can see at a glance how much gas I have, and can send husband to get a refill on the extra tank if we have been slacking.

setup for baking means getting the grate for cooking up away and protected from the direct heat of the burners.

Cast iron griddle over the center burner.

fire bricks hold another griddle.

Upside down perforated sheet pan is the grate.

I run the three burners on low to preheat, and adjust up as needed.

I do this when it's hot out to avoid using my oven when the AC is running.

Thank you!

LOL. I have a set of grates from Amazon supposed to come today. no show. I just checked and they are still with UPS in Texas but at the airport and shipping has changed to "Next Day Air". LOL

Blame it on COVID. Everyone else does.

Any idea if this set is any good?
And/Or if the tongs compare to the OXO version?

If so I'm gonna lowball the seller.

I have never used that set but always felt they were high quality. I am sure the tongs are fine. They differ from the Oxo (and the set I have) in having thicker handles. The Oxo kind have long narrow arms and slender handles.

THEY'RE HERE THEY'RE HERE!!!!

So I'm making a decision I had not planned to make. Been a rough few days (just weather, work, etc) and I want to grill. I have the grates, so even though I have not cleaned the lid, or the outside of the box to get the grease off, and I have not removed the burners, I'm going to put the grill back together and cook on it. IF I can figure out which screws go where. I would normally write on the baggies, but I thought this would go far more quickly than it did. I lost focus and have forgotten where they go.

I have four short, flathead philips, two allen screws, and two philips with washers. I don't remember which holes they came out of. Can anybody help?

The grates came this afternoon.

They were packaged well, and the fit is decent. You can see I didn't clean that little top rack thingy either. *hangs head* I fail at refurb. :(

But I"m SO GLAD THE GRATES ARE HERE!!!

While I would much rather get all the parts and get everything perfect and put it back together, cuz I'm a perfectionist that way, I'm going to move forward as I've been without it for more than a week now. I'll hopefully get time and energy to take it apart again and do more and shine it all up like new.

Any photo requests before I heat these up? And how long do y'all heat them to burn off any residue?

Those look really nice! I would probably heat the grill up a good ten minutes before I cooked on them. As far as that top rack goes, they are chrome plated and you can't really get to aggressive with them cleaning wise. If it's something you use regularly (I do) just get a new one if it's rusty or the chrome plating is flaking off.

Grates look nice.

I store the top rack of my E330 in my garage and rarely use it as it tends to be in the way more often than I would use it.

Get it hot and grill some onions to season them.

It took me longer than it should to figure this out, but I finally think I got the right screws in the right holes. I got it back together after dark, using my phone as a flashlight (poor planning anyone?) I have lost one of the wire clips that was there under the wind shield. I now have only two. But I hope I have them up off of the igniters well enough.

Y'all cross your fingers. I'm going to attempt to light it.

If you don't hear from me, send the fire department.

I do use that top rack frequently for slower cooking and especially for stuff like jalapeno poppers, which get too hot outside for the middle cream cheese if I'm not careful. Took me a while to learn that rack was the way.
