Hey,
We give Chi-Town props when they deserve it.
Which isn't oftern, but hey, it is the birth place of the Weber. You guys should find gold everyday!

It's all in good fun!

I hit a garage sale that I found on Craigs early this morning that said it had a smokey joe. From what I read it appeared everything was from the fifties, sixties and early seventies. My wife and I left a little early to check it out because it was a little out of the way. When I got there I saw it was a three wheeler as I was suspecting it could be, but wasn't sure because the ad didn't have a picture. $3 later it was in my truck along with a few other items and I was down the road.

If the grate's for the new 26 will it fit an older model? I might be wrong, but when the new version was designed weren't both grates moved higher up in the kettle? If that's the case the new charcoal grate might be too wide to fit down in the original location.
</div></BLOCKQUOTE>
It turns out that you are correct. Worse, Weber no longer stocks the older grate. The charcoal grate for the newer 26 is 22" diameter and sits about 2" above the tabs in my 26.

I am now the proud owner of a charcoal grate for a newer 26. (Weber credited and I get to keep.) And I'm in search of a reasonable substitute. At worst, I'll pick up some expanded metal and cut that to fit. At best I'll find a 19 1/2" round grate that I can use instead. Suggestions for a replacement are greatly appreciated!

thanks,
hank

Hank,
I'll measure my coal grate and maybe you can find something that will fit. Maybe a cook grate from an 18"? The 26 coal grate is a beast with extra support.
Could you possibly measure that Ash Pan and tell me what size it is? I am missing mine and don't want a new one for it. Hopefully Weber used the same one that was on a 22 and i can just find one somewhere.
AJ

Hi AJ,
Thanks for the suggestion. I used an 18 1/2" cooking grill as the charcoal grill for my first cook. It sits below the tabs but above the ash sweeper so it did work. Jeff K gives me 19 1/2" for the charcoal grate which corresponds to what I measure on the tabs on my grill. I'll probably pick up some expanded metal and cut it to fit.

I measured my ash pan and got 17" across. It is the style that has the 'J' shaped cutouts that hook over the legs. Where it attaches I measured 13-14" leg to leg. I think you could use the newer style ash pan and it would just sit a little higher. I suspect you could mount an ash bucket and ring but haven't tried that.

Hey Hank,
So Jeff already had the measurement for the charcoal grate.
Thats good, its raining off and on today and I got home after dark.
There has to be somehting thats 19 1/2 that will work. Maybe you could clamp something to the grate that will allow it to sit on the tabs.
Or have someone weld some flat steel to it.
Thanks for the pan measurement. I need to see if its the same as a 22 pan. As for the bucket, I would need to get the 26er one, but don't know if the newer one would work or not. More trial and error I guess.
Thanks again, enjoy that grill!

Do you guys need to know if the older ash pan with the J cutouts is bigger on the 26 than it is on the 22? I could take a look as I have both sized grills with that type of ash catcher, but I wont be home till Friday night or Saturday to confirm this.

Yes, I'm missing the ash pan on my 26. Circa 80's I don't care for the newer style. I was hoping they are the same size. I am more likely to find one that I can use. Yes, the J cut out style.. And thanks in advance!

They are different, the spacing is different too. I have both old style ash pans and the 22 pan doesn't jive on the 26. Maybe you can force it but it will look all warped. I would rather put on the newer style ash catcher like on the OTG. Does anyone know if I could retrofit the new on the old?

If it comes to it, what about laying a couple of pieces of bar stock or angle iron on the tabs to form a big "X" and then laying a couple of 18" cookgrates at 90 degrees on top?

I suspect they might not last as long as grates actually made for charcoal but they'd probably get the job done.

i used two old 22" cooking grates as my charcoal grates for my old 26.

i found 2 that had the welds broken already, so they were a tiny bit smaller. (i have 20+ old grates in my garage)

the coal is a bit close to the cooking grate, but its fine.

, I put a new one on

So you got the new ash bucket, what about the one touch system? Do you think the new one touch would fit? I was gonna see if the 22 one touch would fit.

Brian

The 22 OT fits in the 26. As long as its not a gold one. And the Gold ash bucket won't fit. No idea if the newer 26 ash bucket would work.
