I always take the valves off of the manifold. Makes it easier to rehab the manifold and work on the individual valves. Never had one break in the process. I always use the pipe dope made for gases when I reassemble the manifold.Wow, I have been wrestling with myself over the idea of removing the valves to clean the exterior and paint over the fear of breaking one.
