Major boo-boo with new Q2000

Brand new to BBQing & this great forum.

I've used my brilliant gas Q2000 three times, even managed to change the regulator without blowing myself up.

I forgot to fold the 'side table' flaps out the last timed I switched on to pre-heat.

You can imagine what happened - melted plastic everywhere... mainly on the grill bars but also on the inner bottom half, burner. The drip catcher tray was on fire with melted plastic.

Weber sell the side trays but the ones on their site don't mention the Q2000 for compatibility.

Tried scraping the molten plastic off but it's rock solid... is the whole thing for the junk yard or can it be saved. I'll send some pics of what I've done so far?

Arrggghhh!!!

Darren.

You could always just replace the cooking grates, but if that stuff melted down into the cook box below and you cannot remove it all, I would probably not use it any longer. I am sure the fumes given off by that stuff when heated up will not be good for anyone eating food coming out of the grill.

I’d yank the grates and fire it up or set out open in direct sunlight. Need some heat to loosen the plastic. Get in there with a scraper and scrape it all off. Then I’d get her even hotter, closed, to get the chamber up to a decent temp, say 300 or so, and use maybe steel wool or something and scrub any residual off. After it’s cleaned and can’t see anything stuck on, I’d turn that sucker up as high as it will go for a good hour.

I bet it’s saveable.

And welcome! Hang in there, a little elbow grease and a couple more bucks and it should be up and running.

Thanks for the comments…

It went on hot so it has to come off hot - ***** of a job.

Am I the first do have been so stupid?

However, all of my own making - I won’t do it again!!! 😢😢😢

Really appreciated 🙏

Holy crap. Sorry to hear that!! I have a brand new one and will certainly think of this when I start her up.

Am I the first do have been so stupid?
I'm going to bet that you aren't the first to do it, but maybe the first to admit it! 🤣 Sorry that happened, Darren! I've made my share of boneheaded maneuvers, and I give you full credit to admitting this one! :)

Hopefully you'll be able to get all that plastic residue off the grates and the grill itself!

R

I have done it, but luckily caught it before much damage was done. I may even have a spare shelf laying around. Too bad not close by. I am sure you will be able to salvage the grill.

Man, that sucks! Just thinking, would that melted plastic come off better is it was cold?

I'd reverse the process...use the heat from the Q to soften the plastic and, with welding gloves, putty knife, or screwdriver, carefully pry it away from the grate. Wax on, wax off, Grasshopper. What do you have to lose?

A propane torch or a heat gun will do the same thing, but I assume you don't have one.

Try freezing a grate and then scraping the plastic off.

Thanks for the gems of advice guys - so much great knowledge & freely shared… it’s genuinely appreciated 🙏🙏.

Just to let you know…

I’ve dismantled the Q2000 & taken the plates, burner & cook box to a company who specialise in cleaning commercial cooking equipment.

May cost me a few pounds, but at least I’ll be confident that I WON’T be chewing plastic when I cook my next burger!

I’ll keep you posted & hopefully send some pics of my shiney clean kit!

Thanks again guys x

Darren.

Almost there…. Shiney clean!

Has anyone got a pic of the inside of the Q2000 - it was obvious when I took it apart! Can’t figure out the ignition assembly rebuild 🤔

I’ve also lost the securing nut off the regulator thread - does the burner pipe just ‘slot on’ to the regulator output… doesn’t seem very gas tight!

Man… what a job!

Pics to follow of the stages… if you like?

Darren

It’s okay guys, sorted the assembly… just couldn’t work out why there was a ‘spare hole under the ceramic ignitor.

There may be a technical reason for it but to me it’s a ‘spare hole’ & no need to fill it with something!

Got the Grill on a low heat (150 deg F) just make sure the high temperature paint has cured on the inside of the cook box.

All running good so far without a hint of the smell of burning plastic! 😁😁😁

The last time this baby was running she was actually on fire with black smoke billowing out.

Looks like new again… pics to follow if this whole sorry *ss saga!!!

Thanks for the support 👏
