Lost An Apple Tree -- Cut it up?

An old apple tree in my yard fell over. Should I cut it into chunks for smoking? Does it matter which parts (trunk v limbs)? does it need to dry out for a bit? Anything I should avoid?

I'd cut it up, chunk size, put it in bushel baskets so it will dry nicely and start using it next year but, somebody else may offer a differing opinion.

Yes, absolutely cut it up. Avoid rotted parts, but any solid wood is great. Some say take off the bark but I never worry about it. On apple the bark is so thin it hardly matters anyway.

It looks dead and pretty dried out to me.:)

I'm with Tim on this.
If it was alive last year then the "green" parts could be salvageable, cut up and allowed to dry.
But in the pic it looks like it's been dead for awhile, with dry skinned out bark.
Looks can be deceiving.

That looks like it's been dead for quite some time might have alot of rot inside... Check and see if you can salvage any smaller pieces.
