Jammed casters

Shot in the dark here. The last 3 restore prospects I’ve obtained ( 2 Silver Bs and a Skyline) ALL have jammed casters on them. I must have been lucky until now as the others I’ve done (older 90s models) still roll freely. I know they are available and can be replaced, but wanted to check with all and see if anyone knows any tricks to free these up? If they were all metal it would be a no-brainer and To be honest I haven’t truly examined them closely, just happens to cross my mind as I’m sitting here at a desk poised to order some. I’ve replaced broken ones, but these all seem to be in one piece, just jammed. The foot levers have no effect. I’ll probably hold off on ordering now and try and disassemble one. Just thought I’d ping you guys and see if anyone’s tried.

They are pretty cheap plastic construction - even if not cheap to replace. If the lock lever no longer works and/or there are obvious cracks in the wheels I just toss them. If one is just dirty and moving tightly, I have had luck with cleaning up, lubricating and touching up with black trim restorer to give it a new lease on life.

Hi. I just worked on mine from a 2001 Silver I picked up. I soaked them in oil in the sun for the day but didn’t help. So I tried prying each wheel off. That took a while. They just snap on a metal axle. Finally got them off and steel wooled the little axle and WD40’d it all and 3 of the wheels on the 2 casters turn well and one is a little tight. Mayb it will loosen up with the weight of the grill. Seems like a lot of work but it gave me something to do. George

For 6 bucks on Amazon why bother trying to free them up spend 6 bucks in your labor to do that.

Brian,

So does that Amazon caster fit exactly in place of the one for the Silver/Gold or for the x000 Genesis? Mine shows TWO for less than 7 bucks!!!

Well Brian 6 of em comes to close to $40. The ones I’ve gotten before have the square shank insert that fits into the frame included and run $6-7. That’s capital I could put towards grates and bars of better quality if There was a way to bring them back to life and why I asked. I’ve got surplus time, but can’t remember having surplus cash, but that’s just me. If those Amazon listed will fit into the insert I might be able use them.
All the best

Yes take the old ones out and just insert them using the Weber black cap of course. On the C I finished I did put some grease on them to make them go in easier, got them started then just pushed down on the frame to finish the job.

Bob its a 2-pak for less than 7 bucks so 6 of them is less than $21.00.

I think on the model that has the heavy duty frame forget which one the wheels are larger but these will fit a C or 1000 no problem and if you compare them to the Weber they look exactly the same.

I freed mine up. I use some royal purple synthetic and it will penetrate. I find it's not too rough on plastic, if you have the type that just snap to a metal axle.

Yes, I have used several sets of them on my grills. They are virtually identical to the original casters. I have had very little luck in freeing up frozen casters, these are a great solution and save a lot of time and effort that likely won't work any way.
