Bummer. Nothing pisses you of worse than someone messing with your stuff. You feel so violated. Tell you what, when you catch the low life that did it let us know and we'll show him how to barbe cue some ribs. His!

Hi Joel, I'm in DSM on the NW side of town by Johnston. We usually don't have much trouble but I will be keeping an eye open, I do keep my equipment in the garage but you never know if somebody's going to rip you off. I hope you get the WSM replaced soon and get back to Qin.

Joel,
Sorry to hear about the scumbags taking your WSM. I have often thought about how tempting my WSM & Platinum kettle look with their Weber covers on. I need to think of a way to protect them. I'd chain them together, but then the thieves would just take them both.

I built a shed for the kids bikes. I don't lock the door, any idiot with a prybar can force it open, then I have to fix the door. Locked all the bikes together cuz they would have a helluva time trying to drag six bikes down the street.

Been here two years, no bikes stolen from shed yet.

Joel:

My condolences. Not a cool way to enjoy the summer. Count me in on the posse if it comes to that. Hell, after all, we're practically neighbors (tho TVWBB hood is kinda sprawling).

This has gotten me to thinking that it might be a good idea to mark the cooker in case of theft so it could be identified.

For example, you could unscrew the two halves of the lid handle, write your name inside, and screw it back together. No one would ever know it was there but you.

Regards,
Chris

Aye Chris, good idea indeed, but we should mark each piece just incase the WSM gets taken to a chop shop and, God forbid!, wind up as part of another grill/smoker.

Rath*marking his WSM in the morning*

Chris' idea is good. I'd suggest also marking the WSM in some visible, but inconspicuous way so that you can tell it's yours if you happen to see it (unless you've modified it in a unique way). Maybe drill a small hole on one end of the handle, or through the tab on the top vent, or something else you can spot easily. This could avoid an embarassing case of mistaken identity. Otherwise, you might get the handle apart just in time to see (1) your name isn't inside, and (2) the owner coming out of the house with a 14" Granton-edge slicer in hand.

WOW!

I just got back from a couple of R&R on a lake with the guys. Great way to get my mind off things.

I'm still impressed with the responses!

I DID order a new one using the Amazon deal.My wife insisted. If this had to happen, the timing was OK for the deal.

We have to come up with a way to secure a WSM. I don't want to go through this again. Start posting ideas!

1) I'm going to keep it more out of sight. I guess it'll live in the garage when it's cool.

2) When it has to be outside, I'm be putting it in a less visible spot.

3) I'm going to figure out a way to secure it when it is outside.

THanks again -

Joel

PS: To Ines "Chach" Burriola - I live in Beaverdale. Keep your eyes open. We'll have to meet up sometime.

What do you think: a cable or chain:

1) secure it - padlock - to the dome handle

2) run it through an eyelbolt mounted in the middle section - where bolts for the grate holders are?

3) through one of the feet then to a solid item - like Bryans, cinder blocks or a post (or maybe to the collar of a bengal tiger or alligator.)

A coworker suggested I electrify it and keep it standing in puddle.

Joel

PS: Maybe we need a security thread?

Wonder if they make "lojack" for WSM's?

I guarantee you whoever took it will burn themselves when they use it - too much bad karma not to!

Good luck!
