Is it at all common to inject with bacon drippings?

Inject what with bacon drippings? If you're talking about pork shoulder (butt), any shoulder of reasonable quality has enough fat and connective tissue to deliver a moist and flavorful end result if cooked properly. Save your bacon dripping for recipes that call for lard or Crisco.

I used a lot of Dixie Peach back in the early '60s. Probably a better chic magnet than bacon drippings :

Bacon dripping will have some smoke flavor so it might be an interesting experiment.
