I will just leave this here

Looks like Tom got his at half Price probably free shipping so that would have been a better deal but I paid $20 less than the current price on Amazon so I'm happy with that.

I think you can get as good or better for less $$$

edit: looks like prices have gone up since I bought mine.

I have this one. I bought it a couple of years ago for $25 currently $43

I like the long reach of this torch when lighting coal near the back of the WSK or down deep in my BGE

This is what I already have. I just wanted to try something more compact but I could definitely see the longer reach being more effective on some grills.

I do this sometimes when lighting a full chimney of coal.

I use the torch for smaller smokes.

I also use the torch to light smoke tubes.
I have one of those “weed burner” torches, but I never thought of using my propane turkey frier burner under a charcoal starter. That’s pretty cool - actually hot - and I am sure runs circles around using a couple starter cubes!

For lighting coals the burners in the performers do an admirable job. I could see if you wanted an expedited lighting to use a torch. I’ve always been interested in the torches more for their searing capabilities.

I'm still old school with chimneys - so happy to have scored a 'small' chimney - that I have only used once, but will TOTALLY replace the 'big' chimney. I didn't think I needed one of those 'short torches' before, but I would really like one --- pissed that I didn't pick one up a couple of years ago when they were like $12-15..... I wouldn't pay $40 for one - EVER.

Having a 1# bottle refill adapter - that I got off of amazon for $4 - and four bottles now kinda opens up many possibilities.... I REFUSED to pay $7+ for ONE # of propane when I can get 20# for $10.

I use the side burner on my E330 to light coal more than any thing else. I haven't used a starter cube in a long, long time.

My large chimney, completely filled to the brim, is ready to use in under 10 minutes. Usually only need to run the gas for 5 minutes

I'd done a chimney of coals in that manner back on the old deck. Even though I had protection that lump was shooting embers out like .22 shots and until we ripped up the old deck there were burn marks far removed from where I'd done it. That was my "epiphany" moment and swore no more coal burners or "open fire" of any kind on the deck. Then I simply put the turkey fryer in the yard and put the chimney on it like as you did and always did it right by the garden hose :D
Maybe regular briquettes are not as prone to shooting embers all over. (haven't used them in over 20 years or more) only lump. Reasoning for that is the only times I resort to a coal burner is for really high heat searing of fish like tuna.

I do the same on my S-320 and the only arguments I've heard against it assume you leave the chimney on there the whole time. It only takes a minute or two to get it lit.
