I do this sometimes when lighting a full chimney of coal.
I use the torch for smaller smokes.
I also use the torch to light smoke tubes.

This is what I already have. I just wanted to try something more compact but I could definitely see the longer reach being more effective on some grills.I think you can get as good or better for less $$$
edit: looks like prices have gone up since I bought mine.
I have this one. I bought it a couple of years ago for $25 currently $43
I like the long reach of this torch when lighting coal near the back of the WSK or down deep in my BGE

I have one of those “weed burner” torches, but I never thought of using my propane turkey frier burner under a charcoal starter. That’s pretty cool - actually hot - and I am sure runs circles around using a couple starter cubes!I do this sometimes when lighting a full chimney of coal.

I use the side burner on my E330 to light coal more than any thing else. Not as bad as it seems. I sit by it and watch. Never had any ashes or coals escape and I have either that ceramic stone under or a large piece of metal to protect the deck. I'm not totally insaneSomebody's living dangerously. Yikes!
My large chimney, completely filled to the brim, is ready to use in under 10 minutes.
