1989 for sure didn't have the border and 1992 definitely does have the border. So 1990 and 1991 are a little bit hard to find definitive proof. I'm sure if I keep looking I could find exactly when but that's as close as I got for now
 
That would make sense because I did look at brochures and it looked like they had black knobs still on some of the models and some of them had gone to Gray in the same year. Also I could be 100% mistaken
 
I say we show up at Weber headquarters to demand answers to these questions. Should our knowledge outstrip theirs, I demand to be rewarded with NIB Genesis 1000 grills that I'm sure they have stashed away in Weber's version of area 51. How does that crazy **** sound? Then we can tell them how they should be making grills, I'm sure they will appreciate our input!
