I just looked at a handful of 1992 Genesis 3s and you're right they have the border

Could be right although it feels like it was slightly earlier than that. It may even have been model specific, like how the better models had the flame check button on them?

1989 for sure didn't have the border and 1992 definitely does have the border. So 1990 and 1991 are a little bit hard to find definitive proof. I'm sure if I keep looking I could find exactly when but that's as close as I got for now

That would make sense because I did look at brochures and it looked like they had black knobs still on some of the models and some of them had gone to Gray in the same year. Also I could be 100% mistaken
