I need a lesson in ham.

I used to keep cans of Spam in the garage in case of apocalypse, then I decided I didn't want that to be my last meal. Then I bought freeze dried ice creme just in case. Now it's like I'm so old I plan on going outside to watch the fireworks show. I do have some small airplane bottles of booze just in case.

Honestly you're not missing anything. I bought some once. Tried it a couple different ways. MEH
if you haven't tried spam in decades, I would urge you to consider trying a can. It is one of the rare food products that has gotten better. When I was a kid, spam opened with a special key and was packed with gross gelatin. Today's Spam doesn't have the gelatin and looks much more appetizing. It is also easy to open with a pull tab. We buy our share of Spam because my kids love it. Incidentally, Spam is huge in the Philippines and with Filipinos here. Hormel sells something like 20 flavors in the Philippines. We get far less selection here. The history with our Pacific island friends goes back to WWII.

Oh yeah I worked with many Filipinos at ORD. They would jokingly call themselves the Filipino Mafia LOL. IDK, if you say so maybe I will buy a can. But, all i remember is this gross gelatinous slimy square "blob" so I am having a hard time wrapping my head around it actually being good or a food company actually improving anything in this day and age of everything being cut back or cheapened up

I like to cut a thick slab of Spam (1/3 of the container?) into cubes, brown it, then stir in some leftover white rice and soy sauce, and when it's all hot and combined, stir in two scrambled eggs, mixing it all together until the eggs are just done. I wouldn't be so bold as to call it "fried rice", but I like it when I do it for breakfast! I sometimes cut Spam into thinner slabs and brown it like a ham slice and eat it with scrambled eggs. I like the Lower Sodium version. I hear there's a new Maple version, I may try that one.

Make it with oyster sauce next time and you can call it fried rice. Fried rice is like soup, you can put whatever you want in it.

When I first started smoking I did it for fun. More often than not, I still use a smoker (or at lest charcoal) because we normal only serve ham on a Holiday, which coincides with the Wife using the oven for pies. The toaster oven is not large enough for the ham.
I get cooking or heating it on a gas or charcoal grill. I don't get smoking it on a Smoker or kamado.

I see it in Costco but it's a multi can pack, and I am not brave enough for that given my very negative first experience some 40 years ago. So will try a single can and report back when I do. I will try it in a couple different manners to give it a "fair shake". But, I can tell ya if I open the can and find yellow slime on a "pinkish" brick ain't none of it goin in my mouth. Goin straight to trash. :D

After Hurricane Irene, we had a red cross truck driving around our neighborhood with free meals for awhile. The menu here in New Jersey was typically Italian food - pasta, meatballs, juice, and salad. No Spam.

We have made Spam many ways,in about every way you can in rice, fried rice, love it in a breakfast burritos, fried up,onions, green, red peppers, mushrooms, and scrambled eggs. Then serve with salsa and cheese.
We have thick sliced it on the BBQ then used in sandwiches, salads, and with basics, veggies, and potatoes etc. I grew up in a single family home mon work 2 jobs to feed us and chicken 10000 ways and Spam with imagination was always on the menue. The being stationed in the Philippines,Thailand ,and S Korea I learned 10000 more ways to eat it.
And look at me 71 a still alive .....

Spam is a time-tested product enjoyed by millions. Some people may choose not to eat it, and that is certainly their choice. However, they shouldn't say that it's bad, rather that they simply don't care for it.

Wow, this thread has some traffic: There are three words you need to know, they are: Spam Burnt Ends

Ingredients

  • 1 can SPAM
  • .5 cup BBQ Sauce

Instructions

  • Remove your SPAM from the can then cube it to 1.5” pieces. Or something bite-sized.
  • Smoke at 225°F for 60-90 minutes, remove from grill, and put in a foil pan.
  • Combine them with the BBQ sauce and mix well
  • Then put the SPAM back in your smoker at 225°F for 30 minutes. Then remove, let me cool slightly, and enjoy.
