I have been in the market for a used Performer.... and I found one this weekend at a garage sale. I got them down to $100 and to throw in another chimney. This is my first Weber 22' Kettle. I am pretty sure it's a Gen 3... it is missing the timer. What is the reason for the hinged grate? Is there a stainless version?

Bob,
It says stainless steel, and also "Heavy bright nickel plated steel"
The #7436 is plated and not SS.

I think the Gourmet grate is the way to go, light char baskets or chimney without ever removing the whole grate.

Bob you are right. That is why I have the Gourmet grate system. Works well and really holds up.

I bought the GS grate back in 2010 when it first came out, finally replaced it last year with another one.
The standard flip grate great weighs 5 lbs. and the GS weighs 8 lbs.
Had a pic of the two together showing how much thicker it is, but it's gone now.

PS, nice score on the Performer CHill!

I have two Performers (one gas assist and one without). You can light a chimney without the gas almost as easy. I use an empty, inverted tuna can, place ONE Weber lighting cube in the center, then sit the loaded chimney over the can. The tuna can puts the fire up into the chimney increasing it's efficiency.

When using the gas assist, I turn the gas on, sit the chimney over the gas and let it burn three minutes by the clock. I leave the chimney in place, and dump it when ready (normally in twenty minutes from start up).

CHill;
You have one of the finest grills on the planet!
Congratulations!

FWIW;
Keep on smokin',
