Help finding grates

Adrian, I'm not sure those are worth any further efforts. Replacing them with anything is going to be a big improvement. Those grates are pretty far gone IMO.
Yeah, I don't think these are the cast iron grates we are looking for ;)! That's too bad, but maybe you can use them for a while until you can save for a better solution. Unfortunately, that grill is a much less common size, so choices are fewer and prices higher.

I think one fix to consider is to get one of those cross-hair sear grates:

Then, maybe, get something like this to fill in the difference:

You will probably have to cut one of those grates to the right width, but with a basic cut-off tool you can do it fairly easily.

All told, you would be in for the same $200 or so. I don't think there is a cheaper solution.

The other fixes would be to:

(1) check with Dave Santana (aka "rcplanebuyer") who can make you a set of THICK real stainless grates that will last far longer than that grill. Likely to be well over $200, but you won't look back. He is a superb American craftsman.
(2) go with the GrillGrates. In spite of the controversy, they do work well - just differently. I rehabbed a Genesis 300 grill for my friend for Christmas and included a nice set of stainless grates (though not Dave Santana quality). He liked everything, but the next Christmas I bought him a set of GrillGrates for that grill. He loved those and never went back to stainless.

I doubt Dave's grates will cost that much. Though with all the fake things going on who knows.
I would certainly look into it and find out before making a choice. We all know his are top drawer. I have to think, though, that he is facing the issues with rising metal prices and availability issues.

Adrian -- that grill has a set of three grates, right?

Are all three of the grates that you have completely shot?

If not, you could get a few panels of GGs to replace just the worst part. Or get one or two grates (SS or CI) from a donor grill. Or have one part be a griddle.

Especially on a grill that wide, it would be just fine to have the cooktop broken up into a mix of griddle, GGs, SS and/or CI.

Since your grill lacks a sear burner, I think you could really use a section of griddle or GGs as a sear zone. And then have the rest be CI or SS grates for indirect use.

As you know Jon, when you were visiting I shared with you what it cost me for the custom grates on my Wolf and they were IMO very reasonable. Now I won't share this publicly because out of courtesy to him I don't want someone cornering him saying well "you only charged so and so this much". But honestly to all his price was VERY reasonable and the quality and service impeccable. And if I am going to spend the $$$ for quality I am going to spend it with someone like him. Who is truly a craftsman and takes such pride in his work

Larry,
I totally agree. I think Dave is very fair with his pricing, especially when you take into account the quality materials he uses and that he is an American craftsman who make the best. I admit that for flip grills, it is not generally realistic to use the best. And I feel some import stuff is at least reasonably decent, though certainly not anywhere near Dave's quality. For personal use, though, he would be anyone's first choice and would be worth waiting and saving up for.

I do wonder how stainless prices and availability are impacting Dave's business. I agree, though, that regardless he is worth it and that he will always be fair to his customers, standing behind anything he does.

Oh yeah on a flipper, most people won't recognize you put those in there and won't pay for it. BTW you guys flipping out there (like I flip/repair mixers) beware of the gummint coming down HARD on you if you accept direct payments like PayPal, Venmo, Zelle and so on. Work only in cash. Myself I am shutting down my EBay business. I am done. And what little business I continue to do I will insist on only cash face to face transactions. No checks either.

I have to laugh, though, because take it from me: The IRS is so overwhelmed and so messed up right now, that there is no realistic way they can possibly chase down millions of on-line, small dollar transactions. I had a client who received an outrageous tax assessment (well into 5 digits:eek:) based on various proposed changes, almost all of which were wrong. I obtained a power of attorney form and filed a response to the notice back in October. Today, she received a letter saying they were too busy to respond yet and to allow them another 90 days to respond, at which time, if they still had not been able to review our response, they would send ANOTHER letter asking for more time!

I also prepared a tax return for a deceased woman which we filed on time this past May. The IRS acknowledged receiving it but always showed it "In process" - with an $11,000 refund for her heir hainging in the balance. Five months later, they sent a notice asking for more information about the heir who was also the Personal Representative. I sent that right away (in October). Here it is January 2022, and no refund. The return is still "In process."

And you are going to tell me they are going to be able to go after all the little Etsy and eBay merchants, much less grill flippers? Good luck with that IRS. Nonetheless, this is a pretty invasive action that shows how desperate the government is for more revenue. At a minimum, they need $ to buy ink to print more money:LOL:.

Maybe it was @LMichaels avatar that piqued the gummint's interest in mixerdoc [post #29]...;)

4.5 million people quit their jobs in November. "The Great Resignation"...what are all those people doing to generate an income? The gummint wants to know, apparently. Larry is right...cash and face to face might be inconvenient, but everything else leaves a paper trail. I think the thing to note is that the payment apps are required to make the report. If or when the gummint takes action is anyone's guess.

Oh, and this is really funny to me, but there is a young woman, a Tik Tok influencer, who claims to have made as much as $45k a week, over $200k in total, selling her farts in a jar.

Everything has a consequence. She sacrificed for her craft. Who said hard work never hurt anyone? :)

And then there's this...

There is a connection between Venmo, PayPal, et al, and drug dealing that was unknown to me until a report about a young woman visiting in the area that bought a fatal dose of fentanyl via Venmo. That might be why the gummint wants reporting of activity of $600/yr. or more...

Jon, in many ways you're right. But this granular intrusion and invasion into the most minute minutiae of our daily lives for something as mundane as getting a little "beer money" or just a little cookie jar fund is awful and over reaching to the point of being scary. I have quit selling on FleaBay and any other place that requires anything other than straight up cash face to face. Am I scared the IRS is going to take away the little pittance I make selling a mixer here or there? Actually no, because I realize they're overwhelmed. But what DOES scare me is they are building the justification for ramping this up.
I will make no secret. I have never earned a lot of $$$ in my life no matter my profession of the many I have had. I kept a roof over our head and food in our belly but let's just say we pretty much go paycheck to paycheck. A few years ago (while I was actually working at THREE jobs) to try so hard at doing this, we get a notice we're going to be audited by the IRS.
The guy who showed up was OK. Not rude or anything. But, I asked him at the end. "Why does the govt waste your time, put added stress in normal people's lives for basically nothing out of people who earn basically barely subsistence funds. His answer was "because we can".
Anyway, I still have my Ebay account and GunBroker accounts but only to purchase. No more selling. I will toss stuff in the garbage before I try to sell on anything traceable again. Yeah, this scares me that much. What's next? Are they gonna have IRS agents at your garage sale? Enough is enough

Find any stainless steel grates from any brand that you like and cut them down to the correct size with a DeWalt blade in a Milwaukee saw. Problem solved.

Use this link to find his CL adds. Then click on one and email him through the add and let him know what you are looking for.

RCPlanebuyer
I'd like to pick up stainless steel grates for my Genesis 1100 that is undergoing either a cleanup or restoration (depending on well I control my tendency to take things completely apart). I'd prefer to buy from him directly rather than going through Ebay, but that search doesn't turn anything up currently on CL. I'd appreciate it if someone could PM me his contact information.

I‘m still mesmerized that you got that red head for $100. It’s a steal. I couldn’t flip a grill like that. I’d be too proud to let it go. Absolutely gorgeous.
