Has anyone had Trigger finger?

It's a condition that causes a finger to lock up and can be quite painful.
I had it on my left hand ring finger last year but it went away using otc meds.
Then I got it on both thumbs plus my dominant right hand ring finger.
Talked to my Doc and he prescribed Meloxicam. That and some pressure point massages did away with the thumb issues but my ring finger still has pain.
I have a hard time holding a knife or screwdriver or worse my Grandsons hand. I have a appointment Friday to see my Doc and get the steroid shot.
Question, has anyone had this and have tried the shot or have any other options ( besides surgery )

I've had it (slightly) and my wife has it to a greater degree. It's caused by inflammation, particularly of the tendon sheath. Meloxicam is a widely used NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug)...they even use it with dogs. I had better results with piroxicam but my insurer doesn't cover it. We have both had the shots, not for the trigger finger but for osteoarthritis. Our rheumatologist gave us both an "emergency pack", a 5-day course of methylprednisolone, that works extremely well for inflammation of a joint due to arthritis or gout, but I'm not sure it would be appropriate for trigger finger. There are blood tests for inflammation...Sed Rate by Modified Westergren and absolute eosinophils are two that I'm familiar with, and uric acid for gout. Have you had any bloodwork done?

Have it right now in my ring finger right hand. Wear a finger brace every night to bed. Terrible. Had trapeziectomy surgery a couple years ago same hand thumb joint and just don’t want to go through anything else making this hand useless for weeks.

Yes and it's horrible. Don't laugh but I got a lot of relief from Acupuncture. I was the biggest skeptic on this but, my buddy took a chance with it and he's even more skeptical and cynical than I am. So when my Chiropractor recommended it for issues in my sciatic and my neck I was hesitant. But he said he got relief with it. So I went ahead and let her do it. A couple issues with doing it for trigger finger. It's a but uncomfortable to almost panful because of where the needles need to go. She also gave me relief in my feet locking up. Again getting the needles into your foot is a bit "touchy" but I'll tell ya, it gave me a lot of relief. When I told my MD about it she was so impressed and asked me for the name of the therapist (my Dr is from China FWIW) so she's very familiar and believes in it.
Also depending on what they're treating you for it's a little "weird" at times. because you might find yourself laying face down in a table with 15-20 needles in all parts of your body and once the needles are in she can't put a "cover" on ya so there you lie with skivvies pulled down, needles in your derriere, down your legs, your hands, feet and what have you. Thankfully no one who didn't belong going in that room did not simply "waltz" in :D It's an interesting and drug free concept and I am actually pleased with the results

I had it in my right thumb a few years back. I had two steroid shots in two years. Haven't had it pop up since.

Following along....

I am 62 and this year noticed "bumps" in the palms of both hands aligned with the ring fingers. Left hand very small bump, right hand more pronounced.

Showed them to my doc at my physical and he says they are "Dupuytren’s contracture" which apparently is more commonly known as "trigger finger". Told me its hereditary and to monitor it......

I don't have any discomfort or bent digits at this time.

Link to one of many articles I found to read up on it.

@timothy what OTC meds did you take which made yours go away?

I'm glad it worked for you but I have a fear of needles. I can't look at them or i'll pass out when doing blood work.
Well you don't see them at all. My therapist is VERY good and VERY gentle. Honestly in most (I'd say 95%+) of the needles she places in me I don't even know she's doing it except I can feel where her other hand is feeling for the "nerve spots" (IDK what to call the spots). The only time I feel any discomfort is when she has to put one in a very inflamed nerve. Funny thing sometimes the nerve will actually make the needle "jump out" or it will "dance". A couple times she's laughed because I KNOW she put one in and it will literally "jump" out of you and across the room. But we both laugh, she gets another one in and holds it until it settles down. Honestly it's sort of relaxing. You never "see" them and rarely even feel them. I have to avoid NSAIDS because I'm at Stage 3 Kidney failure (thanks to a few things): Being diabetic, having chronic high blood pressure, but primarily because early on my regular MD tried treating me with an oral med she did not realize would cause irreversible damage to my kidneys. As right after she put me on it my blood work began showing issues. She did not put 2 and 2 together and wasn't having success with the diabetes so she sent me to the specialist I see now, who affirmed the med caused the damage, and also to a Nephrologist who further confirmed the damage primarily being caused by the wrong med used for my issue. But, I have been quite stable so knock wood..................

I had a left finger “lock” in the middle of a night playing with my band! Talk about feeling worthless! Thankfully it passed after some finger stretching exercises and I have only had it start again a couple of times since and none that were as bad. The band has pretty much retired so, middle of a gig misery is gone! I do do finger stretches several times a day anymore, that seems to have solved the problem.
I would not wish the misery of trigger finger on anyone, it’s completely debilitating if you don’t catch the contraction right away!
I was out for half a set that night, it can still hit but, I’ve learned what to notice which helps me. It may not be a serious condition in my case but, it still is irritating!

40 years as a heavy equipment mechanic, yes arthritis in my fingers. Temp solutions, wear gloves to bed to keep the fingers warm especially in the winter. I go to the gym now and they have me throw a weighted basket ball off of the wall and catch it, this helps to keep the fingers moving but I still have the pain that wakes me up about 4-5 times a night. :( No more dexterity in the hands.

I have this, I retire in a few more years, I hope it doesn’t get worse.
